What a day! I hit A pole in my parking garage, and I’m pretty sure I totaled My 08 228kmiles Prius. I don't have collision on my insurance plan. I was wondering if anyone knows of somewhere in Tampa FL I could Sell it for parts without getting totally ripped off so I can Put it towards getting another car. The hybrid battery is great. Guy said it was new when I bought It. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I am At a loss and honestly don’t even know how this happened. I wasnt even looking down. :(

Bummer... I look at the photo and try to convince myself it's an easy repair, but the more I look the more discouraging it gets.

Do you have any friends that like to tinker with cars? There have been posts on Prius Chat of people rebuilding severe damage but that was with brand new Prius that were worth way more than thousands in parts...

But who knows, without taking it apart and looking closely it's hard to figure how much frame work you'd have to do so all the used replacement parts fit. Probably not likely, but like I say, if you have a friend with auto body and auto repair experience that has room for a project car.

I've bought perfectly good Gen2 HV batteries at the wrecker for $50 of late... The days of a hybrid battery pack being considered valuable are over for older model hybrids...

Do you have better pictures of the damage? Does the car turn on and run? A picture with the hood open if possible, would be best to see the damage

There is a foam absorber behind the bumper cover, maybe it's not that bad

With that sharp of an impact, the damage most certainly pushed the radiator core support structure.

I recently hit a deer with my 05 and the damage appeared to be much less severe than you see in the photo. The estimate came back at $3600. A $1000 of that was to R&R the core support because it was pushed back an inch. At 322k mi. That totaled it. The damage is all cosmetic. The headlights still point in the right direction. I’ll just keep driving it til something else happens. It’s got rust forming in the rear rocker panels. So its get closer to the end of its life now but still drives just fine.

Parting out a car is not something most people should attempt. It's a lot of work and folks that buy wrecks know this and aren't going to offer you top dollar just because you're in a jam. You're best bet is a Prius rebuilder in your area. Gen 2's aren't being used by most commercial operators any more.

You'll want some kind of real proof that it is OEM like a receipt from a Toyota dealership but it can be partially disassembled to check module dates for verification. Lots of folks say "new" when it is really a rebuilt/repaired battery that was "newly installed"; subtle but BIG difference in meaning, price, and longevity.

    GOOD LUCK!

    I absolutely agree with this.

No matter how many people chime in and say "Don't be so negative, it's a piece of cake."

Well it is NOT easy and the potential hassles can often be WAY more than the few dollars that you stand to gain.

I suggest contacting a few salvage yards in your area and selling it all in one piece.
    Your sanity will thank you.

how can you compare an almost new pack to a perfectly good one at the wrecker?

Only way I’d know is by the case color, stickers and module dates;).

But it’s still a good, big question on how much you really know (y).

Because the wreckers don't have a clue and everyone in the used car parts industry is too freaked out about high voltage & hazardous waste fears to establish a rational market. The risks of it all makes them treat these packs like an Ebola corpse... Most of them sell straight to the scrapper because they don't even know how to safely and legally resell them, let alone determine date of manufacture based on the code on the modules.

And yes $50 is a great price. My rebuilder friend is always pleased when I get another one for him at that price. In general he never has to pay above $300 for his used packs and he goes through hundreds of of them a year... And again, because there's no standard industry practice for evaluating and reselling used packs for anything other than nickel scrap, buying in this market is like buying a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

And on a more practical level, a used pack is going to require 20 hours of labor to recondition and prep for sale with warranty if you have a couple thousand dollars in diagnostic gear and bit under 8 hours of labor if you have $30K in diagnostic.

As for craigslist, I did have a friend by a 2013 Pack from a wrecked Prius on Craigslist for $750 in Portland, OR area and we put it in his 2005 Prius... It's still the strongest pack in our local group of battery pack nerds and tragically, that pack has been sitting on his shelf for months because he's been driving his grandson's pack he pulled from that car after it was totaled. Keep in mind that reconditioning and testing those modules from our best pack pushed his cost over $1000... As in the value of rebuilt packs is for the labor more than the pack itself.
