Hey Everyone, My wife recently upgraded to a 2018 Prius Prime (loves it!) after her 2009 Prius was totaled. I drive a 2019 Nissan Leaf and we're wondering if we can use my 240v Leaf EVSE to charge the Prius at 240v. Are all/most J1772 EVSEs interchangeable or is it possible that the Leaf EVSE contains Nissan-specific circuitry in the brick that might make using it on other EVs a bad idea? It would be great to know if anyone's tried this. Thanks for any advice you can give.
Yup. J1772 is J1772. It's an industry standard. Quite a few people use Leaf EVSEs for their Primes or PiPs.
I use a Ford Cord that is J1772 to charge our Prime at work. Cheap find on Craigslist that works well.
I bought my used Plug-in Prius from a Nissan dealer and was told there was no EVSE with the Prius. After sealing the deal I asked if they didn't have a used one from a Leaf laying around. He went in the shop, got one, and threw in the back for me. Works fine.
Like everyone said, yes it will work flawlessly. You can also use your 120v OE Toyota EVSE unit at 240 volts, this also works flawlessly and your charge up time will be 2 1/2 hours. If you have a NEMA 6-50R, 10-50R, or 14-50R as your EV receptacle, splitting that 50 amp power source Without an electrician is simple and cheap. Then your 240v* Nissan EVSE can charge the Leaf at the same exact time that your OE Toyota EVSE charges your Prime at 240v for 2 1/2 hour fast charging. Just to clarify for anyone who might not know — that dealer was wrong unless he just meant that that particular PiP didn't have one. If you're buying a used PiP (or Prime) and it doesn't have and EVSE, I think I would expect a price adjustment for buying the missing equipment.
You might want to check and see if it was one that's part of a recall. Ford Issues Two Safety Recalls in North America | Ford Media Center Sorry but I don't know how one would check the cord specifically. I'm still using mine FWIW.
I use this cord on the 8 amp setting and a GFCI . Definitely no extension cord. The seller of the cord works at te dealer, so I’ll check and see if I can get a new one. Never know unless you ask.
Mine is connected to a timer box so I really don't think the new one with the thermistor would help anyways.

Just an FYI... the charger is actually in the vehicle. The cord simply provides power. The cable is like a water hose, the charger is the valve, and the battery is the tank
Understood. I just wasn't sure if there was something in the Nissan brick that might cause it to be incompatible with the Prius charger. Thanks for the help.
