In the second generation prius, how do I get it to display the miles remaining based on the current fuel and mpg, or is that only on 3rd gen? Thanks in advance
Uggg, that's a bummer. Was sure there had to be one. I hope there's a low fuel light that comes on before the last dot on the gas guage oes away?
Check the owners manual and you will see the low fuel light. Most Prius owners don’t wait that long though. The gas gauge is more of a suggestion than a solid indicator.
On the Gen 2, the low fuel warning is signalled by an audible beep, the message "Low Fuel" on the MFD (appears briefly) and the last pip on the fuel gauge starts flashing. I reset trip B to zero when I hear the beep and use that as a DTE of sorts. You can go whatever your current MPG is x 1.2 (so, if 44 MPG, you can go 52.8 more miles). The low fuel message will appear on the MDF briefly at start up until you refuel. A big caveat to US owners, because of the flexible fuel bladder, YMMV. Because of the fuel bladder, they usually never get to experience the low fuel warning. Instead they opt to fill when the gauge is down to the 3rd or 2nd pip.
Do not run out of fuel especially in a 2005 your wallet will really regret it. That could be one very expensive day.
Why not just fill up when there's at least a couple of dots still showing on the gas gauge? Why play Russian Roulette with a little bit of gas sloshing around in the bottom of the tank, LOL?
While I don't actually have a Gen2, I thought its gauge was the same as a Gen3: that last dot never goes away, even after you are out of fuel. But that dot does blink (continuously) and beep (once) as a low fuel warning. Beware that a certain small fraction of U.S. Gen2 owners, with that problematic fuel bladder, have had their cars run out of fuel before that blinking and beep warning was reached.
