2019 Prius XLE awd-e backup beeping

I brought my Prius v to my dealer and had him reduce the beap to a single beep...

 

Not sure on the new ones, but I've always had success with Carista.

 

I don't think you can turn it off the beep completely, but can be changed to a single beep. If the dealer would not do it for free, buy Carista adapter Carista OBD2 App | Diagnose, customize and service your car ($20) and you can either pay for the subscription or use it just during a free trial period and cancel the subscription. Or if you already own a compatible ELM327 OBDII adapter and have an android phone, you can also use Prius Tweak app. The app is no longer available in Google Store, but can be side loaded by downloading APK hear. That worked in Gen 2 Prius, since Gen 3, you need a OBDII programmer. The dealer can do it, if they ask for cash, that is your hint to choose a different dealer from then on. If someone in Boston has one, they may volunteer.

I would not buy an OBDII gizmo just to make the beeping go down to once, but it may be a tipping point for you.

Tell your dealer you're sick of the horrid noise and to change it to just the one beep on selection. Mind did it free - as, I reckon every dealer should BEFORE delivering the car.

 

2019 Prius without AWD does it as well. And I'd be totally fine with it had the car been also built with an actual backup alarm going off at the same time. My dad keeps hearing it when I'm on the phone with him, and he is just bewildered as to why Toyota put the back-up alarm on the inside of the vehicle.

 

Because it’s for the driver’s benefit.

 

Tell service guy that you were told by the sales guy, service guy or manager, doesn't matter really, that you have beep changed to a single beep, and they should do it for free.

 

What benefit?

Am I that senile to where, suddenly after 46 cages, and ten road motorcycles, I now need the beep inside of the car to keep people safe instead of on the outside (which might warn those I may hit)?

Oh, I see - I must have bought a car designed for the short-bus people. My bad.

 

Well you bought a car where the 'stick shift' looks the exact same in every gear. (There is only one gear, the electric motor just spins the other way in R)
Some bureaucrat thought you needed more guidance than that, and Toyota had to implement beeping to sell in the US. (it was the cheapest change possible)
Had Toyota used a shifter that cosmetically looked to be in different places, we would not have that single beep in R (you did get it changed to a single beep, yes?)

 

Except my last 2 cars, the gearlever looked in the same place whether you were in "R" or "1" - as it sprung back somewhat after selecting.

 

I wonder if the United States average IQ has increased or decreased over the past 100 years. I'm guessing the latter.

I believe it's changed over the years - to try to smooth out various biases etc.

 

I would get the Carista adapter. It fits in the prius obdII slot better than the others because it does not have a bulge. Then after you are done with the tweak you have the benefit of running apps like hybrid assistant. Its nice to see your coolant and battery temps on long trips..

 

Yes, there are many changes over the years. But the constant is that the median score is always 100.

 

I guess what we also need, then, is a score that compares without floating.

 

I've lost track that I'm in reverse, with the beep. At least a couple of times I'll admit to. Only moved a foot or two in the wrong direction before waking up, no harm done. But yeah...

I don't much like the shifter; it's "clever", like so much Prius stuff, but it is dangerous. I much prefer a mechanical shifter: there's something (what's referred to as "muscle memory"?), that keeps you mentally "planted", when you physically pull the shifter from P, to R, to N, and to D. I never lost track with that system.

I guess the anonymity of the return-to-centre shifter was drawn to Toyota's attention, early on, so they came up with a bandage fix: the beep. Trouble is, it's not that effective. You hear a beep, yes. The same beep you hear every time backing out of the garage. What's that for again...?

 

Yeah I keep the beep on to not forget its in reverse. Its annoying as hell.
