Happy with the local dealer

I just used genuine Toyota 0W-20 oil in my son's Honda. Genuine Honda 0W-20 oil cost almost twice as much on Amazon. I just looked at Honda manual. It basically says as long as it is API certified 0W-20, OK to use. So what makes Genuine Honda so expensive?

If I had to buy new I would have used Mobile 1 from Walmart. I just happened to have a case of Genuine Toyota 0W-20 on hand. Bought them over two years ago cheap on sale for my old Gen3 Prius. I can't remember exactly what I paid for it, but I think I paid less than half of MSRP, around $4/qt. Didn't need to use them while I had free Toyota Care for the last 2 years.

 

@Salamander_King : same story here. I buy Toyota oil for a couple of other family vehicles, currently a Honda and Mazda.

 

I buy the valvoline 0-20 synth at the mart for the honda and will use it in the prime when I change it the first time.
I had to change oil in my leased PIP after it's 5000 mi service. I noticed the oil was mud light brown before I took it in and wanted to see if they would change it as goodwill. No deal so I just did it myself with valvoline and a new filter insert. No issues after that up to the 20k turn in. Oil stayed as pristine as the breakin oil from the factory. So clear it's really hard to see on the dip stick.

So comparing my over 2years old Genuine Toyota 0W-20 and newer bottle uploaded by @dig4dirt, it looks like the current version is SN Plus certified. I don't know what the difference between SN and SN Plus. Are there difference in oil quality in those two? Or is it that new SN Plus grade certification did not exist two years ago, but the contents are the same? The Toyota parts # is the same. "6S" in the newer bottle just indicates 6 in case packaging, I think.

Just like all we talk about over here is Prii.

But there are plenty of heated debates about oil and what to use and what additive packages are best and on and on and on and on....

So I’ll listen to those that banter frequently on the subject .

I had let the dealer do their best by having them change my oil for the last 5 years.
However, after reading much here and bitog, I see that most know that dealers do not use
Toyota branded oil, but most Prius owners seem to use Mobil 1.
I recently decided to do all my own maintenance and got some Toyota branded.
Changed it out with OEM filter.
But since it is "branded" Mobil would be the most widely used in the Prius, so I
took advantage of the rebate and will do Mobil 1 from here out.
Just not sure on the filter now...oh the dilemma

 

I don't have 2 years old Mobil 1 label, but if it was API SN Plus since 2010, it should have been labeled such 2 years ago. And if the Genuine Toyota 0W-20 is re-branded Mobil 1 oil, it should have been API SN Plus certified two years ago. Humm... I wonder if there are any quantitative differences in between those two bottles of old and new Genuine Toyota 0W-20 oils? Regardless, when I use up what I have left, I will also switch to Mobile 1.

 

Hmm. cant find any thing on SN+ certification before middle of 2018
Is it because there was no such thing by API until then?

Or is that the oils today are 10 year old formulations?
