Gen 5 Prius (possible in 2021) will we possibly see 60mpg?

    What I would like to see is for them to take both a PRIUS and a COROLLA Hybrid on the same loop in convoy - they've done that on occasions. Last I saw was they took a Petrol and a Diesel together on a 50km circuit, swapped drivers and did it again. I might send them a query!!

    Thinking about it, what I would like to see for the Gen-5 Prius is an awd plug-in Prime, with a much smaller engine (essentially just a gas-powered generator), and the whole body of the car a solar panel. The solar-panel wrap/paint is not quite in production as far as I know, but it is being tested.

    This. By the time I wanted an AWD Prius, the Prime had my attention so I had to choose between AWD and PHV. PHV won (I use winter tires anyway).

    They can sell more of if was AWD.

    The AWD on the Prius is so limited as to not be particularly useful for anything else other than getting the car moving. For my money (and a lot less of it), a FWD car with 4 snow tires beats AWD with no snows. I don't ever get stuck with FWD and 4 snows for lack of traction - there are places where the snow is too deep for the car, but AWD doesn't fix that problem.

    Four snows on wheels, less than $700 typically. AWD is either a $1,000 or $1,500 option, depending on the trim level, and adds both weight and complexity to the car at all times. Plus, the $700 isn't a completely sunk cost, since when the snows are on the car the all-seasons are not, so the cost of the tires is offset by the wear savings on the all-seasons.

    I commute over a small mountain pass, and my fwd passat diesel with four new bridgestone ws80 winters would sometimes struggle.
    The awd on the Prius works until 70kph, and It'll also have four snows. I look forward to winter :)

    Those are good tires. I sold my Jetta TDI wagon to VW and replaced it with a Prime, and without snow tires the Prime is better in the snow than the Jetta. Too much torque from the diesel at low RPM, perhaps. But, on similarly crappy OEM tires, the Prime wins in the snow.

    I'd like a temp spare, no sunroof, 3 door touch to lock/unlock, driver-centric dash controls, Homelink mirror, no honking-great, portrait-oriented iPad in the middle, generous storage, two glove boxes, nice looking silver alloy rims without plastic covers, for sure climate controls that can readily be used without taking your eyes off the road, and if possible: ditto for the radio.

    I don't think I have a hope in hell, lol.

    When that comes out the garage queen will still have less than 100 k kms;).

    You’ll need to wait for the Gen6, if there is even one (y).

    AWD should be standard equipment. The Prius is already known as a snowbird by car review sites. Handles well in the snow. Toyota just introduced the Corolla Hybrid which looks to be an excellent car. They probably should make the plugin standard as well and either a bigger battery pack with more regenerative features if they do not want to go full BEV with the Prius.

    That is a $1000 - $1500 up charge whether you want the feature or not. This is not likely to increase sales. Even pickups come with 4WD optional.

    Coming to this thread a little late and it is kind of wandering, but my 2018 Prius 4, new in Dec 2018 and low miles, is getting consistently over 60 mpg. Several factors help--I'm retired, live in a rural town uphill from our main shopping 12 miles away and the speed limit is 55 mph on the main highway. I have only 4000k miles on it--Toyo tires. If I get green lights on the stop lights on the main highway in town I can get over 80 mpg--maintaining 35 to 40 mph--the speed limit in heavy traffic. My last tank, hand calculated, was 59.8 mpg--this is with full time AC running this summer. This car beats my 2010 Prius about 10 mph better all the time. Of course, like Mendel Leisk said in a previous post, the mileage comes with a lot of things I wish werechanged. My car is currently sitting in the driveway on Saturday night of a 3 day weekend with a flat tire and no spare. Does anyone know if you can by a donut spare to fit this car?

    Glad you're getting such good results. As for a spare, there are tons of threads here about that. Short answer is, "yes." If you want to spend some extra, you might even be able to get the parts that go under the deck to keep the spare under there like the trim 3, which came with a spare last time I checked.

    But most times, a simple plug kit and a compressor will get you on the road in a few minutes. I just plugged another tire on my wife's '07 last week. (I have no idea how she gets to many punctures.) Nevertheless, sometimes there's no substitute for a spare.

    So perhaps the goal should be getting scores like yours in less restrictive conditions? Maybe you’d see 80-100 driving such a car in your environment.

    Personally I want to see Toyota brake out of Their safety or bubble and catch up with technology. I don’t own a Tesla but follow what they are doing. Prius once a technology leader has fallen behind. Self driving features that get better with updates. Better battery consumption with updates. Better in dash with car play and updates
    If you purchase a car for 5-10 years and there is a option to upgrade something big, ie. right now if I could get car play on my factory unit on my 2017 for an update that cost $500 I would pay for it.
    If they would have put hardware for self driving option that can be updated for $500 or $1000 people would spend the money.

    especially if the upgrade can be done via wifi or phone connection.
    i love the Prius but right now the Corolla is as good option as a Prius.
    Casing extra few mpg or l/100km is pennies.
    The difference of Tesla 3 Vs Prius over 20000km a yer is about $200-$300
    Tesla’s tech is way advanced in my opinion
    But the Prius is still more economical when you look at ownership over 5 years.
