Potiential Prime Buyer, need advice on mpg

    I think on a level playing field, with the Prime in "hybrid vehicle mode", the Prime will better the Prius mpg by a bit, due to the larger battery, and programming differences that take advantage of that. But not sure.

    Both get stellar mpg, and I would not fixate too much on that. Consider too the hatch space compromises on the Prime. Also at least some of the Prius levels still have a temp spare tire, if that matters to you.

    Here's some Transport Canada info. I believe the "denomintator" numbers for the Prime correlate to Hybrid Vehicle Mode? Not sure. Also, the site is buggy: it has an option to show US-friendly mpg values, but I couldn't get it to work. The displayed values are liters per 100 km, and lower numbers are better:

    Crossing the Cascades twice with both freeway (70mph) and low speed mountain/country driving 30-40mph still netted 3.5L/100km. That still beats the 3.7L/100km I had on the 2016 Liftback in 40mph with brief 62mph stretches and the 4.1L/100km on freeway driving.

    Your memory is correct.

    The front end is worse for aerodynamics as the designer wanted a more stylish design over the regular Prius. The dual wave rear window partially offsets that.

    Liftback is 0.24 and Prime is 0.25 Cd.

    Thanks. I thought so. It seemed like the engineers were a little annoyed by the designers (which happens a lot!!!). I can see how they felt, but I'm glad for the design decision. That difference in cd is a microscopic cost compared to the appearance improvement. When a guy who drives a new Corvette Stingray sees a Prime and goes, "Hey! That's a nice looking car," it's a big change from previous looks. I never heard comments like that about my last car that had a cd of 0.25. :D(y)

    Heh heh. We've had many hybrids over the past years, but NEVER a Prius, as my wife detested the "Aztec" like butt.

    No quite a month into it...I'm at 2,730 kms...averaging 2.6ltr/100kms...or 90.46 U.S mpg. Love the car.
