But I have one advantage. I get $0.55 a mile for my work mileage and free charging at work. So some months it about $700 towards the new car. The more electric range plus free charging the lower my cost. No brainier.

But doesn't the average commuter (masses) drive more than a measly 25 miles per day?
And wouldn't they (masses) prefer a car that needs service intervals of up to 2 yrs, if it is driven in EV mode mostly? The current oil change interval is so,,, old fashioned,,,, regardless of how clean that oil is.
And they (masses) would love it to be Actual EV driving. Not Limited EV driving.

At some point toyota will have to make a purpose built PHEV and stop 'patching' in bigger HV battery packs.
Get that pack out of the dang cabin of the car already.

Source: (PDF) Extended Range Electric Vehicle Driving and Charging Behavior Observed Early in the EV Project

ECOtality North America, OnStar, and the Idaho National Laboratory have partnered to collect and analyze electronic data from Chevrolet Volts enrolled in The EV Project, which is a large-scale plug-in electric vehicle infrastructure demonstration being conducted in 21 metropolitan areas across the United States. This paper presents results of an early analysis of these data. The data set analyzed came from 923 privately owned vehicles, which logged over 4.7 million driving miles from October 2011 to October 2012. These data are used to identify the potential of electric vehicle (EV) mode driving, based on driver and charging behavior. Driving and charging behavior is quantified with metrics such as daily vehicle miles traveled, number of charging events performed per day, and distance driven between consecutive charging events. Drivers averaged 40.7 miles per day, with a median of 31.6 miles per day. Vehicles were charged 1.46 times per vehicle day driven on average, with a median of 1 charging event per day driven. This results in an average of 27.9 miles between consecutive charging events and a median distance of 19.8 miles between charging events. . . .

I've been waiting and hoping that Toyota would sense the hooves of the competitive posse riding up to take the technology lead in cars. We considered the Chevvy Volt, but didn't want to deal with GM's customer insensitivity, having owned Cadillacs in the past which left a bad taste. Moreover, no car company has the reliability and manufacturing quality culture that Toyota has cultivated through successive generations of corporate CEOs.

It's time for Toyota to realize the hydrogen replenishment stations aren't on the horizon but electric power is. Moreover, electric replenishment is available everywhere. The Prius Prime is a gasoline car with electric on the side. The Volt was an electric car with gasoline on the side. That was a workable transition model until electric batteries allow a 500 mile range. We're not there yet.

Hey, Toyota, get with it and give us a creative response to the electric transition before you lose altogether the franchise that you built up with your hybrids. Forget your bureaucratic obsession of when you introduce innovations. You're playing catch up now and the innovations should have been in the last generation. The least of the needed advances is wireless CarPlay. How can you be so obtuse about clear market driving forces like that?

But, CarPlay is the least of your lagging. You need to bring back the imaginative engineers who led Toyota's technical and reliability prowess and restore the Toyota that once was challenging the leaders in the global marketplace. If Toyota continues to falter, then China is likely to take the lead, and even Donald Trump will be hard pressed to block that.

not sure what you're looking for exactly, but they did get CarPlay. don't know if it's wireless.

if you're thinking volt like, that's unlikely, since volt was too expensive to make or sell

How long after everyone else? The Prius was once a technology showcase. Smart phone integration should have been one of the top things for the current generation. Specially considering the popularity of it in Japan.

GM cut the Volt MSRP by at least $6000 with the new generation. Some cost reductions only come with large scale manufacturing. Toyota had no problem putting out a high cost product in the hopes that the large scale production would follow with the Mirai.

They are taking the lead. With the "early adopter" stage, that simply meant breaking new ground. But now with the "mainstream" stage, that means reaching out to the showroom-shopper audience with affordable solutions... which is exactly what Prius Prime and Corolla PHV are doing. That recent spy-shot of a supposed RAV4 plug-in hybrid mule further supports that effort to grow beyond just the eco-conscious buyers.

Don't let enthusiast rhetoric distract you from the realities of true change.

Supplies are slowly increasing. I’m starting to see more Primes in my area. (Saw two black 2020s in the last two days)

The current Prius platform allowed 4WD and Solar Roof Prius with Prime as problem batt to fit there, becuase they had to leave space for those other options. Also they were maxing MPG so trying to stay small size. Maybe next time they add a little space and maybe they give up solar roof option, allowing hiding Prime batt better?

    Say what? What "lead"?(n)

With these few PHEV's, which are just patches to the existing models, and are not dedicated PHEV platforms, which could have a decent EV range and a proper TMS for the HV battery pack, (which just sits there in the cabin of the car, like a forgotten suitcase under the carpet)...,,,, some enthusiasts might say, "Too Little. Too Late".

Meanwhile more and more BEV's are on the market!
So many choices ! , if you look beyond this one multi-national corporate manufacturer!!

The Ioniq PHEV does a better job of mounting the battery by having it extend from under the rear seat into the cargo area. From what I've seen of those areas in the Prime, it would require major restructuring of the chassis, as there is a barrier dividing the under seat space from the back. They could split the pack into sections, so part can go under the seat.

i have to agree with john here. if you look at each fleet, toyota is leading with overall offerings.

    Define offerings.
    In regards to plug ins in the US, to Toyota's 1;
GM, Nissan, Jaguar, Ford, Subaru, and Mitsubishi all offer 1.
Honda, FCA, and Mercedes/smart have 2.
    V/Audi/Porsche have 3.
Hyundai, Kia, and Volvo have 4 each.
    And BMW/Mini has 6.
    Fuel Economy

Toyota offers more hybrids(10 off the top of my head), which do reduce fossil fuel use, but they don't offer a way of replacing that fuel use. They have the potential to be PHEVs, but to date, Hyundai, Kia, and Ford have all had more hybrid models with PHEV versions for sale. Thats' what have of Hyundai/Kia's plug in offerings are now. In regards to the Ioniq and Niro, they did a far better job of packaging the PHEV than Toyota did with the Prius Prime, and I don't have much hope Toyota will do much better with future PHEVs using TNGA.

relative to johns post, toyota has several hybrids and one plug in, and maybe another coming.

they have led alt fuel vehicles for the past 20 years and continue to do so.

what you have listed are almost meaningless

while i would like to see them do a few things differently, there's no denying that no other manufacturer comes close in commitment and actual vehicles on the road

VW is investing tens of billions into EVs. They already have a BEV platform ready to go. Volkswagen Group MEB platform - Wikipedia

"Manufacturing will need to start shifting ahead of the volume increase, such that by 2022, VW Group plans to have 18 factories in its three main markets of Europe, China and the US configured for BEV production. Eight of these plants will utilise the group’s lead platform, the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB). The Mosel plant in Germany will be the lead MEB plant, starting in 2019, and will be joined by two additional plants in Germany by 2022. The Chattanooga facility in the US will focus on North American EV build."
VW Group "all in" on BEVs | LMC Automotive

Production at the plant in Anting, Shanghai starts next year. When it reaches full capacity, 300,000 BEVs can be made there a year.
Volkswagen Group China builds first factory specifically designed for MEB production

It is even getting into battery cell production.
VW Will Make Its Own Batteries to Power an Electric Future | WIRED

Toyota has the knowledge to make a EV, but that alone doesn't get a car to market. To date, their BEV and battery production announcements have been focused on China.

but this isn't about bevs. not this thread, or johns statement.

toyota has done more in the past 20 years and will continue to lead in fuel efficient vehicles.

dumb is nothing but vaporware until their 'investments pay off. what are we talking, 2050?

VW is already making a BEV on the new platform.
The 300k China BEV factory starts production next year.

I have my doubts about VW too, but that new BEV platform is already to go. They were working on it while cheating with diesels.

agreed, but again, it's who is leading, not who is promising the most. i don't know any other way to phrase it, that's what i'm agreeing with.
who will be leading 10 years from now? no idea
