Took my 2013 PiP in for routine service. 85k

They said I should replace the thermostat because it was leaking coolant at the seal. So I did. Drove the car out of the shop and the message:
"Check hybrid system stop a vehicle in a safe place immediately"
came on after a minute of driving.

Went right back and they couldn't figure it out, and began to make the "coincidence" defense already.

Any ideas what they could have messed up replacing the engine coolant and putting in a new thermostat housing?

I have a feeling they will find other things and I'll get a whopping bill and still have no idea what the problem is/was. Unfortunately, I'm out of state and a thousand miles from the mechanic I trust back home.

Thoughts? Theories? I want to be well armed when I go back in to talk with them further. The diagnostic codes did not immediately reveal anything, so they'll continue looking at it.

This can happen from them temporarily disconnecting something while they did their work. Ask them to clear the codes, and that might be the end of it.

    welcome!
i don't know if it will set that warning, but they often don't bleed the system properly.

    who is they?

one thing that will set the warning is a clogged hybrid battery cooling fan. make sure the intake is clear, and have someone clean the fan.

Was this a Toyota dealer or at least a hybrid shop? Ordinary shops may or may not be able to read all the codes. If you got that message, there must be a code that generated it. Without the codes, it's just an expensive guessing game unless you see something obvious.

As for the battery fans, that would be a coincidence, but they are hyper-easy to access and clean on the PiP. Also, make sure there's nothing blocking the air intakes for the battery ventilation system as @bisco mentioned.

Oooh! Just a thought. If it's not a hybrid shop, I wonder if they drained the inverter coolant by mistake. I can imagine someone who didn't know what they were doing, draining that and going, "Oh! It has two drains." Then they drain the engine coolant and refill it while the inverter gets left high and dry.

It was at a Toyota dealer. Now they say it is the inverter/converter and it will be covered under warranty. I'm nervous though. It's too coincidental that it went 30 seconds after driving away. I suspect they did something else wrong and the new thermostat wasn't functioning, or maybe they drained the wrong coolant.

So, after waiting until next week for a new inverter, will that fix it? They claim they chased down all the codes and it's just a coincidence. I don't believe in coincidences though. Maybe it was ready to go and this pushed over the edge? I can't imagine.

Yeah, the timing is pretty suspicious. My guess is that someone new or not paying attention mistakenly drained the inverter coolant and you drove off without any which fried the inverter and they don't want to admit to a big mistake like that.

It probably didn't do the transaxle any good either, but there's a lot more mass to heat up there, so the inverter would go first. Hopefully, when they get it all back together you'll be a happy camper again. With a new inverter, which ain't a bad thing. ;)

    But do you own a 2012 PiP or a 2013? Post say's 2013, profile say's 2012?

Well...I suppose I DO believe in coincidences. But maybe not in this case.
    What do you do?
The same place that "might" of made a mistake, is now handling the warranty work on your inverter. What are your options? If your lack of confidence is strong enough, I suppose you could cancel everything, and try another dealership.
Are you willing to go that far?

Whatever happened, you need the work being done now, done.
I might let them do it...and hope for the best.
They aren't going to admit to making a mistake. You aren't going to be able to prove it wasn't a coincidence. The choice is yours.

I don't have much choice other than to have them do the work. Unfortunately I'm 1000s of miles away from the guy I trust in Tampa, so this is the best/only option. Toyota is covering the replacement, so it won't cost anything other than now I'll be nervous that some other problem is still lurking to get me on the drive back to Florida in a few weeks.

It was only driven a minute or so before the warning came on. The coolant in the 2 pink colored tanks on either side of the car looked okay when I stopped, so there was coolant in there, unless I'm misunderstanding something.

Knowing really nothing, my gut tells me that the new thermostat malfunctioned and didn't open up or whatever it's supposed to do, so as soon as there was heat on the gas engine the warning came on. I can't believe the inverter is faulty. They said the Toyota rep was there and looked at it and concurred, but who knows how much is just BS to keep me happy.

And yes, it is a 2013 PiP, not a 2012. I had picked the wrong year on the profile.

I can't see how a thermostat problem could be related to an inverter failure. They are two totally different systems. If there was coolant in both reservoirs, then it was most likely just interesting timing. That can and does happen. I'm glad that you'll get to drive it a while before you hit the road to come back to FL.

Are you familiar with Tampa-Hybrids? That's where I wish I was now for sure. I've had nothing bug good experiences with Todd. He seems to know all there is to know about the subject.

Somewhat familiar. I've bought five Prii from him so far and sent two friends there who bought from him. You could say I like him. :D

He told me the other day that he's getting a little overwhelmed with repair work and has had to turn away a few jobs. That says a lot about his service and quality, but he sure could use another skilled mechanic. Naturally, he gives priority to people who bought their cars from him though. I'm sure he'd have been able to fix you up better than what just happened.

LOL. Yes, he's great. He's been a big help for my daughter and her Prius as well, even though for both of us it's a 90 minute drive. Well worth it. He's answered text messages on Sundays and even charged me nothing to swap out my radio/GPS unit when it failed with one I got from a salvage yard. He refused to accept any payment at all. I can't imagine buying another car anywhere else! I have to resist checking his website to avoid temptation when he gets new cars in or I'd be driving a new vehicle all the time.

Ironically, I see Toyota has sent me some mail back home in Florida, but I'm not sure what it is yet. Will have to have the neighbor who's collecting the mail read it to me. Maybe it's the same letter my daughter got about covering the cost of repairs under certain conditions. I guess would be a real testament to Prius if a feature was that they only fail when you're already at a dealer for routine maintenance. Maybe the GPS detected the location and called it in? :)

So I probably shouldn't mention that he has a Prime Advanced and a Prime Premium right now. :D (He had one or two other Primes the other day, so we're starting to get some out on our streets finally.)
