Another Prius was targeted recently at a local shopping outlet to me, in Thamesmead. A post was put on the Facebook page where this was announced by a local cab firm, they confirmed a new Toyota Auris has had their catalytic converter stolen from Woolwich. It seems now if it has 'Hybrid' anywhere on the car then the goldmine underneath is worth taking.

I believe the Auris has a panel underneath the Cat which can be removed to gain access to the Cat, Toyota said on one of Danny Wong's tweets that its impossible to steal the cat off an Auris, well, according to Danny it is possible.

I believe on the post I put, it was a 68 plate model, however I’ll see if I can find the Facebook post again to confirm.

That is my understanding as well.

As I mentioned up thread I got talking to the guys at the Honda dealership that I used to look after my old (now gone) Honda Hybrid. They had a Civic Hybrid in for a catalytic converter theft. Pretty worthless part all told, but these (probably home grown copy cat) morons see the 'Hybrid' badge and automatically think it's a goldmine.

Needless to say I am now schlepping about in a car that is powered by an internal combustion engine alone. A pretty horrid experience it is as well - both on the pocket and the enjoyment. :(:(

I think the bus is my next step. But rest assured I'll still spread the word about the CAT thefts to all and sundry as I travel about. Even the little old ladies on the bus. Everybody needs to know about this criminal activity that is going on unhindered.(n):(

Is it conflation, to say hybrid vehicles and valuable CAT's go hand in hand?

Yup, seems to be over here. Well, the thieves see 'Hybrid' as $$$$$$, or £££££££ over here.

If the thieves conflate, then it isn't conflation, lol.

I have a question to the UK guys. Now that you know how the thieves work, if you saw a theft in progress how long would it take the police to respond?

My cat has been stolen recently, I have bought cheap aftermarket from ebay and denso lambda sensor totaling 180, I will do instalation myself, free :).
My question is are those low life cretins, stealing only original Toyota cat's or they stealing all cat's no mater who made them.
I'm planing to put some stickers on my car saying cheap aftermarket cat instaled, I hope it helps, unless they stealing every cat they can find.
I believe cheap aftermarket cat's doesn't have precious metals and is not worth stealing. ‍♂️

They don't respond. Well they didn't respond to me. They gave me a crime number, and load of waffle about being understaffed. They finished the call by saying it was a 'victim-less' crime so holds very low priority for them.

I got the distinct impression they could not have given a stuff about my predicament. :(

Unfortunately there is a saying called as thick as thieves it’s seems at the moment anything with hybrid label is a target. But it does seem those in the know are not after after market ones but you never know a thick thief may not be able to tell the difference. After all what is it to the thief they take it in minutes if it’s not any good it’s your problem to sort your car out your still out of pocket even if it’s £180.

So it would be wise to park it securely if you can. Maybe not parallel park but in between two cars reducing working area so jacking it up is not as easy.

What is this...........”Police” you speak of...?
In Londonium, UK, we appear to be quite unfamiliar with the term.

Tragic humour aside, methinks London is now twinned with the criminally fabled Gotham City....except we have no caped crusader......

    Just Wonder
Just wondering if anyone with 3rd party 'cat', had second attempt of theft.
I was told in toyota, some guy got twice, original cat stolen.
I completely agree with you, remove then check.
I hope, my notice in the front side windows, about aftermarket cat, will trigger something in their brainless heads to check before committing crime.

How unbelievably horrid.....and acutely depressing .
You’ve gone from gliding blissfully down the road in “The Sitting Duck” barely 6 months ago....to biting the bullet and settling for a decidedly lesser functional Honda Hybrid....only to discover the lesser intelligent created home grown Grand Theft CAT wannabes (who incidentally grew up vociferously playing the infamous GTA games - its always been a Bible to them) are now targeting any vehicle with a hybrid tag on it.
So, now you’re forced to ride around in something you actually loath.
You’re no longer allowed to have good things!
Nobody is. Buy it and they’re fully empowered to take it......

These gormless human stoats (with apologies to genuinely innocent stoats) think they’ve discovered the modern day equivalent of El-Dorado, with mythologically lucrative Platinum (Rhodium and Palladium) mines lurking under every hybrid vehicle, harbouring untold riches.
Just waiting for the apex predator to hunt down and claim their prize!

These human vermin fervently believe that this time next year, they’ll be millionaires!
All they have to do is steal catalytic converters from under a bunch of “useless hybrid cars that are just scams that don’t really have any purpose anyway, and certainly DON’T save the environment”..... (from their highly illiterate and equally demented point of view of course).

These GULLIBLE “Moronii in extremis” (no, I cannot speak, read or write Latin....I made that up)....would have pep talked each other into believing they’re doing the world a favour “innit”?

They’ll trade stories and web links about how a Hummer is actually greener than a Prius, or indeed, any other hybrid.
So they’re REALLY saving the world!
It’s also a victimless crime really, as nobody gets stabbed or hurt - indeed, even the local UK law enforcement seem to have given their surprising “seal of approval” by not apprehending anyone engaging in this form of relative “rascality” on a national scale.
They’re also on record saying they haven’t got the resources to track down and catch any organised crime syndicate who engages in this harmless pastime anyway, so it’s a downgraded crime. A very minor misdemeanour.

Victims however, are repeatedly stonewalled with a glib “T’is but a mere scratch....man (or woman) up, and here’s a crime number for your insurance. You DO have insurance, right?!!”

The criminals are rolling on the floor laughing, pretty much the same way a bunch of rats bulked up on testosterone might surround a scrawny looking dwarfed by comparison, cat (a la rat catcher) intimidatingly, pointing and laughing darkly at the poor feline which they could easily consume in a few fur shredding moments.

How on Earth did the United Kingdom devolve into a Gotham like morass, where the criminals rule supreme, and the innocent victims metaphorically, repeatedly, lick their wounds after multiple encounters with these lowlife vermin that our government seems to have decided have far more rights to do what they want, and you and I are darkly expected to just stand there and continue to be stabbed, beaten up, robbed, burgled.....or have your catalytic converter nicked. Repeatedly.

Mark6868 and many other ex-Prius owners now no longer have their prized and beloved vehicles, either sold off for peace of mind, as law enforcement can no longer guarantee basic security in any parked location - even large shopping centres.
While others have had their Prius vehicles cynically plundered by these brazen thieving scum (fuelled on by a year of relative inactivity by law enforcement in terms of apprehending them).
When the cat’s away, the mice will play.

The aforementioned plundering has resulted in very many vehicles being written off. These are Prii that realistically had as much as another 80k to 100k miles (UK) of life left in them - due to their being unusually, highly reliable!

This is why WE can’t have good things.
Thieves and vagabonds seem to have Carte Blanche to plunder the honest and innocent folk at will - while those who should protect us, try tooth and nail to cynically convince us that this humongous injustice (a human rights failure if there was ever one in a so called civilised society)....that having your goods / property / vehicle parts repeatedly stolen by these entitled lowlife riff-raff is now the grand order of things, and we had better bloody get used to it!
    No! The Police will not protect you from them anymore, because;

    “IT’S A VICTIMLESS CRIME”...!!!

Never mind the emotional turmoil, the inconvenience. The fear of a repeat theft. The shocking realisation that you no longer live in an entirely civilised country - the goal posts have been moved, and YOU the innocent and honest tax payer have been thrown to the wolves!

Meanwhile, more and more criminals, emboldened by the lack of any spirited attempts to apprehend and legally prosecute them (accordingly) are turning to a new lucrative career in crime.

    Grand Theft Catalytic Converter (UK).

    Yup......indeed infinitely depressing!!!

p.s. As I’ve wantonly, with malice aforethought, insulted, abused and belittled those catalytic converter stealing criminals repeatedly in the post above, I can fully expect the full weight of the law to crash down on me (sooner rather than later) for hurting the criminals feelings!!!

    Kill me already!!!

If you aren't already Data, you should be a writer. :)
I know it wasn't your intention, but your post brought a smile to my face as you have put into (wonderful) words exactly what I want to say.

You have beautifully expressed my thoughts exactly, so thank you. :)

On 'The Sitting Duck' front, I am reliably informed that my old Gen 1 is still being used daily and is 100% reliable still. A new MOT was passed without any advisories only two weeks ago. The Air Con is doing an icy cold job in this weather, and the new owner is very happy.. :)(y) Not bad for a car that is 18 years old.:)
