Undeleting the spare tire from a 4

Traded my 2018 Prius so I will be selling the full size spare and aftermarket wheel that is pictured above in my previous post. I have the 2 OEM foam trunk pieces that are pictured as well. Full size spare has TPMS sensor. Tire is OEM Toyo. Everything is in new condition and only a couple of months old. Located in Orlando, FL. Planning to do the cutout method as described recently above. Looking into getting an appropriately sized donut. It seems that donut sizes vary...does it matter if the donut doesn't match what the manual says?

Prius 2016 manual says spare is wheel: 17 x 4T, tire: T125/70D17
The 2016 normal wheel / tire is 15 X 6 1/2 J and P195/65R15.
But other versions of the 2016 prius (same manual) also include P215/45R17 (17 x7J). The same spare size is used for all of them.

The 2015 prius has the same normal size (15x6J, P195/65R15) but uses a spare of size (16x 4T, T135/80D16). This spare size is the same as the one used in the most recent corolla.

My questions:
1) Why do the spares differ for cars that have the same basic wheel ('15 and '16 prius have same base wheel but diff spare size).
2) Does the spare size matter? Or will any of these work?
3) Any other concerns? For example, will the lug nuts match up? Will either size fit in whole in the back of the 2016 Prius trunk? If anything seems like a smaller tire should be more fittable (2016 prius says spare is 17", but a 2015 prius 16" tire should definitely fit then?)

 

I think the 3rd gen spare (16") is a better choice: it's virtually the same OD as the regular 15" tire. The 4th gen (17") is oddly undersized?

Not sure why they would change it.

 

OD's of 15", 17" (3rd or 4th gen) and 3rd gen spare are all very close; the one outlier is 4th Gen spare, which has significantly smaller OD.

Cost? Sorry, but I ended up purchasing the last four items through a local dealership so the costs were a bit on the high end (on the order of $600.00). I bought the spare donut, itself, off of eBay for about $120 (including shipping) so the total was a little over $700. Supposedly, you can get the OEM parts at wholesale prices through (quote) on-line warehouses (end-quote) at lower prices, as listed in previous comments. However, not mentioned in the previous comments, added shipping costs make this equally cost prohibitive - upward of $180.00 shipping for the three deck floor boxes. In the end, I got frustrated and just went ahead and got the items by the most expeditious means available.

I posted this mainly to confirm form-fit of lohikaarme's parts list (corrected) that he had provided earlier, since there seemed to be some confusion on the matter due to alternative parts list provided in this thread.

In any case, if anyone knows of a way of getting around price gouging (via shipping costs) of OEM parts from "on-line warehouses" they should start a new thread on this subject. I am sure that it will start a lively discussion.

Have to cut anything? No. However, after installation, the cargo floor and Weather-tech liner had about 0.5" gap (not shown in the photos) at the rear left and rear right edges. This was caused by the elevated position of the floor after installation. I was willing to live with this.

 

No. Especially if you are trying to level the cargo step and outfit as a prius camper, as the deck parts listed do a pretty good job of it! We really appreciate all the research you did on this.

 

Nice job! Out of curiosity, will the retractable cargo cover still fit into the cutout, or is the spare too "tall" to allow it to fit?

I’ve got a 2022 XLE and I can’t get then plastic screws out to even see what I’m dealing with under the foam. I’m turning and they’re not coming out. Any advice?

I've read through this thread and an other threads I could find to help me figure out how to include any type of spare in the 2016 Four Touring I just purchased. I was very limited in the choices I had so I did willingly purchase it without the spare. As I was leaning to using OEM Foam from a model that did have a spare the costs began to climb and I started thinking outside the box. I first got a spare, found one on Ebay that was from a 2021, for $110, $142 with the shipping and tax. I ordered the OEM hold down discounted through parts.toyota.com and picked it up at a dealer with no shipping costs, roughly $10. Now I worked on removing the OEM Foam. I think those large white retainers were already lose because everything came out with just a bit of a pull/tug. I left the retainers that were right behind the back seat in place so that the floor/decking could still be attached. I purchased two 2×4 ft pieces of 1/2 inch plywood $45.64 and cut the two pieces to shape of the removable rug. That wasn't quite the correct dimensions but after shortening the pieces from the top end, that would face the back seat, they fit nicely then and I left the retainers for the floor board accessible. The plywood laid across the spare quite well and it all went back together. BUT one problem. The two pieces of foam glued to the underside of the floor were now sitting against the plywood making a gap I was not comfortable with. So I went and got a piece of R4 Insulation Foam board ($25.30) 3/4 in thick to match the thickness of the existing foam. I tried my best to make a template from the floor I removed to get the correct location for the area I needed to cut out. I wanted one solid piece but it was too hard to fit it in. I cut it in half and it fit great. I notched out the space for the retainers near the back seats and now it all fits well with no gaps. I haven't folded the seats down but however it fits it will do. The tools are all around or in the spare. So far no noise but this summer I will try to make that area a bit more "pretty" Everyone's retro fit that I've seen looks great. I'm cheap as they come some times so total cost of this project will all parts was $223.37. Even that was more than I wanted to spend but I'm happy with the outcome.

 

Any goop in tire is deciding factor, has goop, tire is done for.

 

So, incredibly (to me), even my GF's 2019 Cadillac XT5 came with no spare tire. I have to go through all of this all over again for a Cadillac.

 

At least in a Cadillac I bet the shape of the cargo area is much more square. I enjoyed retro fitting the Prius but I totally understand how it can be a pain. Good luck. I'm happy to help any way I can.
