The other day I was waiting at a left turn signal. I heard a toot on a horn from the guy in the lane next to me. He made lowering-the-window motions, so I, thinking he was going to tell me there was a flat or some damage to the car, lowered the window. But what he asked was, "How much?" Took me a second to realize he wanted to know how much I paid for the car. Another potential Prius convert out there...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(kimgh @ Sep 5 2006, 05:15 PM) </div> Well never at a light, but I have had the question put to me. Most are suprised at how little I paied. If they get a ride they are even more suprised!
Not at lights. (I did have a guy ask me where I got my hybrid lightbulb antenna topper. His wife drove a Prius.) But I have had people confront me in parking lots. Yep, they are all surprised at how little I paid and how much I got for my buck. They are also surprised (pleased, shocked) at the mileage I get. A few still ask where I plug it in at night. (Not yet, soon, soon.) No one thinks I was stupid to buy the car. Most think I was quite savy to buy one when I did. And all think there are still long waiting lists and long waits to get one.
I get accosted coming loading groceries, in most parking lots and occ. just driving down the street. Mostly I enjoy educating them but sometimes I am in a hurry!!
The only acknowledgement (that I've noticed) while stopped at a light was from a fellow Prius driver. It was a South Park Smug-Alert episode thing...I was in the right lane at a red light, and another Prius pulled alongside my right between me and the curb, en route to making a right-hand turn. Our windows were both down and he gave me the double thumbs-up and said "Nice car...way to go!" and I replied with a thumbs-up and "Thanks! You too!". I got a really good laugh out of that one....   Other than that, non-Prius drivers usually ask me random things/make comments while in parking lots or while fueling up. The usual stuff: How much did you pay for it, How many miles per gallon do you get, How much does it usually cost to fill up, Is it on, It's so quiet, etc.
I had a guy at a stoplight a few days ago ask me my mileage (he was in a truck), and then yesterday i was walking into work here and one of my coworkers was behind me and asked how i liked it, my mileage, how many miles between fill-ups, number of gallons at fill-ups (it was 7:15, neither of us had woken up yet enough to do the math, so iw as just going with standard numbers)... he ended by gripping about how his truck only gets 10 MPG and takes 25 gallons per fill-up every 250 miles
That happened to me once. A guy pulled up next to me and asked "how much?" and "what's the mileage you're getting?"
Isn't all this a normal occurance? Happens to me fairly regularly (every couple weeks I'd say). Usually it's coworkers or family/friends, but occasionally strangers in a parking lot or gas station. Of course, where I travel (especially outside of the Chicagoland commute) there aren't many Prii.
