New Prime Owner w/ a few questions

Once a charge is initiated, it will continue to charge until battery is full or the plug is removed. L1 charging needs about 5.5 hours to fill the battery and L2 needs a little over 2 hours to complete.

 

I purchased a second L1 charging cord that fully charges my Prime empty battery in only 4.5 hours.

 

If you charge on max amps.

Another variable.

But just as simple to manage.

 

Humm??? How are you achieving 1 hour shorter charge time by having a second L1 cord???

 

My car only takes approximately 4.5 hours to charge from empty to full in my garage with the original issue L1 charging cord. I haven't tried it elsewhere, but I assume it's got something to do with the flow from my outlet because the car always estimates 5.5 hours to full.

 

What Jerry said: set a start time OR set an end time OR charge immediately on plug-in.

 

I wonder if there are ANY PiP/Prime users who correctly figured this out the first time they wanted to set a charging schedule. Pretty much anyone who has ever used a device with a start/stop timer will get it wrong (in my not so humble opinion).

 

So, your line is higher than 120V? Have you measured it?

I got it the first time. I don't think there is any way to set both start AND stop time on the schedule

 

Worked first time for me. Just took the manual literally.

I will say that the actual programming of the times was sometimes flakey in that it didn't always enable the "Edit" button. And changing a scheduled time sometimes seems to unexpectedly create a whole new and apparently overlapping schedule point.



Which part of "One of the two ... can be selected" is confusing?

 

The dealer that sold me our Prime had this done for me.

So done right the first time.

And haven’t needed to adjust it yet.

 

I have not measured it - it’s merely an assumption on my part.

 

I confess that my problem may have been that I just assumed that they were using a start/stop time model like on the prehistoric VCRs, and didn't read the the manual close enough to understand that they were using a "set start time OR set end time" model.

 

Our last set of VCR had VCR Plus+ recording function that took the code directly from TV guide. That was at least 20 years ago??? I can't even remember if we ever owned VCR with start/stop timer only. LOL

 

I just plug in the new cord like the original. No difference.

 

Are you saying the OEM cord takes normal 5.5 hours to fully charge from empty but the new one you purchased can charge the same full amount in 1 hour less in 4.5 hours? That is too strange.

 

If that is the case, it is pulling 14.667 amps from the outlet, which is a lot on a 15A circuit. (5.5/4.5 * 12) The electrical code specifies 80% load for charging use - 12 A on a 15A circuit. So, I'd be interested to see the certification listing on that EVSE or any nameplate specs.

 

You might "read" only 21.5, but you will get more than that if you try! Lots more if you are easy on the acceleration, and lots more if you use the ECO heating/cooling, and lots more if you shut the air conditioning off. Sometimes I use the air until it's a few minutes before my destination. That helps a lot. Acceleration, just take your time at a light and "count it up"... No jackrabbit stuff. Just stay in the right lane. Screw the asses who fly past you and cut you off in their Bubba Jacked up pickup trucks... These and other Idiot Types are to be ignored. Completely. Completely! You'll live longer, and so will your car. Hey you'll get like 100 mpg on a 60 mile round trip commute if you drive electric one way, and hybrid on the return, Wayyy more if can charge whilst at work (only ONE charger in our entire parking garage at work :-( ) hey that's money in your pocket... And wasn't that the idea in the first place? On my 30 mile one way, I can usually stretch out the all electric mode to where I get the 30 miles plus some. The Prius Prime is a car that you "work" with, until the interface, AND you get your act together. And use the ECO ICE mode on those straightaways! Reserve the "performance" mode (can't remember what they call it, display turns red in colour for knuckle busting tight in City Traffic, where you WILL want it. It will take a good few months to get it down pat, and then you're gonna LOVE this car. You can charge this car the day before you drive it, and you won't loose any significant charge, by the way. I do it all the time. The lights? They shut off by themselves, no problem.

Also, Here in Ohio/Ontario, it gets damned cold. And damned hot! So setting aside "economy" on those "extreme" days, the air conditioner "max" setting works really really well. And so do the heated seats and steering wheel. Also, I notice on the Prius Prime Advanced (2017) as well as the previous Gen II and Gen III, the Prius models in the Winter heat up pretty quickly, where that was an annoyance on other cars (GM) that I have owned in the past...The windows defrost quickly, and you are on your way.

You're going to Love this car like no other car that you've ever owned, and you can take that, AND the money that you kept in your pocket to the bank... All the Best!

Just to clarify, as Jerry said, it charges till it's done or till you unplug it. It is impossible to set an end time, unfortunately. On its own, it will never stop before 100%.
