Do you take your car in for first oil change at 5000 miles or does the something alert you when it is time to do it. I believe it came with free service work for two years.
Great to see a fellow Husker that drives a Prius. We also just bought a Prime Advanced and are really new to the Prius plug in world. I am not new to the Huskers. Grew up in Nebraska. Moved to Minnesota in 81 and now live in Florida half the year. Plan on leaving the Prius at our house in Florida and flying back and forth to our house in Minnesota. Been to Lincoln many times to see the Huskers. First time in 71. My sons and I are on a quest to see every stadium in the big 10. Last year Happy Valley and this year Michigan. I sure know a lot more about the Huskers than I do this car. GO BIG RED!!
Does the EV engine has its own separate oil from the gas engine? In my case, due to my driving range, I barely use the gas engine. So should the oil still be changed every 10,000 miles regardless which engine you use most often?
There is no "EV engine." There are two motor/generators in the transaxle and they are, of course lubricated and cooled with oil -- actually Toyota's ATF-WS fluid. There is no specification on changing that oil, but there is a huge variety of opinions here on PC as to when it should be done ranging from practically new to never. I think it's a good idea to change the transaxle oil at least once after it's good and broken in, but it's not critical when. As for the engine oil, if you want to keep the warranty, you need to follow the oil change interval in the manual, which is 10k miles or 12 months, whichever come first, even if you drive 100% EV.
Thanks for the explanation. My lingo in these types of cars is not that great so please excuse my usage of the term “EV engine”. I’m sure you know what I meant by that.
There is a service reminder that alerts you every 5,000 miles. It is a simple mileage counter that goes off every 5,000 miles since last reset. As you approach the 5,000 mile point, it pops up briefly on your display and goes away. If you do not reset it before exceeding 5,000 miles, it remains on the display. You must reset the reminder manually in the Vehicle Settings page.
Also nice to see a fellow Minnesotan here! I have several friends/coworkers who are transplanted Nebraskans.
