My 2012 Prius V is Shaking during acceleration when the vehicle stopped. When it switches from battery Power, it shakes pretty bad. When I press the accelerator more it will drive fine.

So what I’m doing now is to hit the gas hard to avoid slow transfer from battery to power on acceleration. Once it’s in motion it will be fine.

Every time when I have to stop at the light. I have to hit the gas more. It looks like I’m trying to speed up on Green light.

Does selecting POWER make any difference from ECO? Have the IMG/Inverter TSBs been accomplished?

Putting your 2 threads together, I’d say it’s the head gasket;).

There are plenty of places in LA to get this attended to, like at @Avi's Advanced Automotive :).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Have 2012 Prius V 148k mileage same issues and it’s head gasket leak. A cursory review of this forum pretty much shows it is a common issue. Did you get it fixed OP? How much did it cost?

I have a quote of $3400 for gasket replacement. Waiting on quote for new-to-this-car engine. One repair shop won’t do head gasket repair based on mileage and that it’s a common problem but quoted $5k for engine replacement. Waiting on another shop for a quote.

Before I bought this car I researched it pretty well, but not well enough as I did not see the head gasket issue. I was more worried about the battery. Ironic it’s the combustible engine that is the problem - at least to me. Says Toyota and I assumed it would be good for a few hundred thousand miles. Silly me!

I’m reluctant to replace the engine to have the same issue in 80k miles. Expensive mistake/learning experience.

I am having the same problem, my ‘12 Pv has 196K, it started the shake around 194K. I have done as much as I can to clean all the components associated with the EGR cooler, cleaned I take manifold, and replaced spark plugs, replaced PCV valve, but it persists. I am actually taking car to a local trusty independent shop tomorrow morning to see what they have to say. My regular mechanic is currently away, but will take to him for a second opinion as well before making any big $ decisions.

Must be due to over-dumping the clutch!

    Really, how could that happen?

You might be right about the damper, but this seems sorta like a blown head gasket that we got in our 2010.

Did you end up fixing the head gasket? If it ends up being that, I would consider fixing it, if the cost is not super out of the question. The alt would be to find a used replacement vehicle within our cash-payment budget, and whether or not it is a Prius would be TBD. My concern would be that the head gasket would potentially be an issue again, as we would most likely end up with a more affordable/higher mileage vehicle.

The Pv replaced our 2004 outback that we had since 140K/6 yrs and finally sold with also 196K, that needed another (second) head gasket. The difference being the Outback habitually got 16mpg and the Pv gets around 40mpg.

Upload them to YouTube and post link here.

This is a video of a Prius with a dead cylinder. My Prius with a bent valve on cylinder 1 before I fixed it.

If you can DIY, gasket set is about 160, head bolts(reuse at own discretion) are about 120, plugs are 40, coolant, oil, and filter is about 80. Roughly 400 in parts and a weekend or two, depending on how much competent help you have.

Head gasket CAN be done leaving ICE installed. There are multiple YouTube videos showing that.

Here is my Pv making the unhappy sounds. I talked to two diff mechanics today about this video and they both suggested the same thing. I am taking car to one tomorrow so he can check it out in person.

upfront disclaimer; I am NOT trying to hijack this thread, I have same problem as OP....and apparently many thousands of other folks

@cnc97 @Mendel Leisk @Raytheeagle I am addressing this to the guys who appear to have the most knowledge. I am the recent (within the last 30 days) owner of a 12 Pv three w/146k on the clock. Purchased from orig owner, in immaculate condition. all maint records kept and everything he did noted. Truly a "little old guy" who took care of his cars. nevertheless I am fairly certain I got taken. The problem I'm having didn't show up on test drive, only after I handed him the $$ and we both drove away. (I paid $6500)
Being a guy who turned wrenches many years ago, and who has purchased cars from individuals, used lots and a few brand new, I thought I knew what I was doing. I did lots of research on the Pv and trusted the legendary toyota reliability and now find myself fairly certain that I've got a blown head gasket...or am about to blow one...and most certainly have an intake manifold, egr, egr cooler..etc that needs to be cleaned. Probaby need an OCC from my research here and on youtube as well.
Like the op of this thread and hundreds of others I've read over the past few weeks, our newest addition to the fleet is shaking at various times under various types of acceleration, but most pronounced when very little power band is called for from ICE. One note, it has done it on me while idling at a light so I'm convinced it's connected to the ICE vs tranny, cv shafts etc.
so...my question is; How do I find a mech in the greater Houston TX area that will tackle this? From my searches here and the endless pit of the interwebz, I may be out of luck. I'd consider shipping it to Luscious Garage if she wasn't so darned far away. I'm up for a live conversation if any of you guys ever pierce the veil of anonymity...I'll share my contact info.
I hope I haven't violated any forum rules.
    thanks for any help offered

    Welcome to Prius Chat (y).

I’d start with Hometown Hybrids in your neck of the woods:

Hybrid Car Battery Repair & Replacement | Hometown Hybrids

They’ll be able to point you in the right direction ;).

Adding an oil catch can is a great idea:).

Is the engine coolant level stable:whistle:?

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

re coolant; not sure yet, just set baseline today, but it is about 1.5" below the "low" mark on the overflow tank so...I'm going to go with "yes"..it's probably low.
I saw another post refering anohte unlucky owner to hometown hybrids (maybe you referring, can't remember..been lurking for many, many hours) anyway, the OP (Austin Longenecker maybe) replied they had called HH and were told something along the lines of "we only focus on the hybrid/battery related systems" or something to that effect. I'm going to call them in the morning nevertheless.
I'll post up somewhere once I get it all done.
I'm committed to the repair if I can find a reasonable shop that I can trust.

I’d call them and see what they have to say. They probably have contacts in the area, which they might share:).

If they can’t help, I’d look to yelp for good shops that have great reviews if I wasn’t going to turn a wrench myself ;).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).
