Prime without home charging

    KEDAVIS,
    California has big incentives to companies (including housing complexes), for installing public charging stations. Does your work offer electric connections/charging??
    The last apartment where I lived, the manager was kind enough to extend my own 110v power to my adjoining carport. This worked fine til I moved out.
    He actually switched me to the carport which was directly behind my apartment; he didn't even charge me! Where there's a will, there's always a way!!

    On some downhills, around here anyways, they aren’t steep enough to allow regen but steep enough to kick the ICE off. I’m still using EV and can watch the EV range go down. If he already has no EV range the car will act just like a regular Prius and start the ICE back up when he hits an uphill and recharge what the EV mode used. So his mileage will go down while it supplies motive power and recharge the battery for the EV used going down hill.

    Charge-Mode can be beneficial if you plan ahead. Doing that doesn't come second nature though; you really do have to be diligent. That being said, on long trips we found it handy. The overall efficiency gain comes from not having to warm-up the engine later, on the short drives we do around our destination.     If the ICE is providing energy for propulsion and you want to charge the battery, that's one thing. If you are starting the ICE just to charge the battery (when it would not normally be running), that's a different thing.

    Keep the ICE idle whenever possible, then when it is running for propulsion, add the charge load.

    I don't work; I am retired on disability, so no charging at work. As for HOA incentives, I reached out to ChargePoint, who's the appointed rep for the local utility. I'll see what they say. So far 3 owners including myself are interested; I haven't asked the other two.

    BTW, the Advanced does offer, standard, a lock for your charging cable. Also, I frequently use my 25ft, heavy duty extension cord to reach distant 110v outlets at some locations; I've been doing this for over 5 years with no problems (started with my 2012 PIP).

    Yeah, please post back on how this works with ChargePoint--I'm in a situation with my current HOA (disinterest) and I'm trying to see if I can provide them some examples of how this works out in practice.

    It's not a bad idea. It saves so much time. My electricity charges $0.10 a kilowatt hour. So it doesn't cost me that much to use electricity and besides it charges so fast that I'm able to run on EV constantly. I haven't put gas in my car since since the beginning of April. Only am I saving electricity and also saving a gasoline. But in each part of the country I guess it's different with the price of electricity. In the summertime I get 37 EV miles to a charge. I drive to work and it's only 14 miles away so we talkin 28 miles round trip. I come home I charge it and if I need to go out somewhere I'm driving on electric mode Screenshot_20190601-025224_ChargePoint.jpeg

    If you don't need the time saved, then the money spent has no commensurate gain. If you charge the car overnight to get to/from work, 120 VAC will do fine. Even if you put a little extra in the battery using L2, you would need to put a LOT of electricity in there to recoup the cost of a L2 installation. Even with rebates and the like, you still either need to install it yourself or pay an electrician to do it, so there is a cost for the L2.

    Where I live, this time of year, with electricity at about 10 cents/KWh with taxes and gasoline at $2.30/gallon, it costs me about 2 cents/mile on electric and 4.5 cents/mile on gasoline. So, with a delta of 2.5 cents/mile, that's a lot of extra EV miles to pay for a L2 charger.

    I hear you it's going to take a while to recoup the cost of they charge point and electrician to put it in. Couple of years but on the other hand it's just so easy to use and the gas savings is incredible. My electric bill for the month of June $16. If that's a saving I don't know what it is. That's not what it is even will cost to fill up the Prius Prime. And that's with not even using that ICE

    Add to that the reality of how long that charger could remain in service. When looked back upon after a number of years use, it will seem silly to have delayed. It's not like you'll go back to a guzzler later.

    There should be some math to back up this analyis. Assuming you save as much as 3 cents/mile on EV from the wall, if your cost for a L2 is $500 net, then you would need to gain an additional 16.7K miles of range from the L2. Given that you already can do a full charge easily overnight, this becomes the delta - that amount of fast charge that you can put in the car to support an additional trip or so per day that you could not have achieved without the fast charger.

    That was the point. You hadn't considered the bigger picture. It's far too easy to fall into that trap...

    It's a different analysis if you have two cars. The user has one car, so I don't think I'm missing the bigger picture. Given the circumstances presented, it's hard to make a cost case for an L2 charger.

    Actually the best case for an L2 charger is if you do multiple charges like I do, particularly on the weekend. Typically I’ll get my grocery shopping done, then recharge and go to a hardware or lumber store for whatever project I’m doing. Come back home, charge it again and go to granddaughters’ game and/or meet (or even go out to dinner). Since I live in the country, I’m constantly recharging to go someplace. Waiting for 3 to 5 hours while I either top off or recharge completely doesn’t keep up with my busy schedule.

    Maybe your "country" is a bit different than our "country"? LOL.:LOL: The closest grocery store from hour home is 15 miles. But if we want to shop for grocery and hardware and clothing and electronics, we would have to drive 25 miles to the nearest city. Therefore, we are so use to plan a trip to finish all the errands needed to be done for the week on a single trip. It is very rare for me to be needing multiple charge sessions on a single day for my prime even in weekends.

    It may be rare, but some people will need to run a line just for Level 1 charging. Paying for the heavier gauge cable is a low cost investment, even if Level 1 is only used for the Prime.

    I live in Anaheim California which paid me cash $1000 with proof of purchase/installation ($1,100). So for my $100 I got a fantastic L2 charger which very quickly paid out, particularly with my 2-4 times daily charging. Only when I make trips to Bakersfield, San Diego, or Lancaster, do I need to use gasoline! Ya gotta love it!
