I've decided to get rid of mine next year. I've had enough of worrying about where I'm going to be parking it every day, will there be an exhaust left when I get back etc. I'm going on holiday next month and have to leave it at an airport car park for two weeks, I'm just hoping that it's a secure compound and the car will be in one piece when I get back! It should be, I've paid enough to park there.

I don’t remember a steal the cat challenge in any grand theft auto game. Perhaps they should add it for the U.K. version. ;)

I was in the Hyundai show room looking at their hybrid. I asked about the cost of catalytic convertor. The replacement part is £1700 plus labour so I suspect it will become attractive before long

    Oh cr@p.......!!!
If that’s true, the Hyundai iConic ioniq is about to become a target in the autumn.

However, the thieves success depends entirely on the level of factory built protection available underneath the Ioniq, plus I strongly suspect that Hybrid has a tilt alarm sensor installed by default.

The latter would eliminate the element of surprise and near stealth ruthlessly exploited by these parasitic vermin.

It would depend on the amount of precious metals in the catalytic converter, what it's worth to a scrap dealer. The prices doesn't necessarily reflect the amount of precious metal; it might, but who knows.

I drove past a prius today with the family standing around it and the man checking underneath it, and I heard the kid say "is it broke dad"

might not have been a catalytic converter theft and I didnt stop to get involved.

This was at Gaskin street in Islington.

In an alternative note this guy has just put out a prius praising video and he shows you the underneath where the cat is.

It wouldn't surprise me to be honest, still seems to be rife. I now have a noise when the car is above 25mph, sounds like a humming noise that increases with speed. Another issue to deal with! (sorry for going off topic)

I was talking to the guys at the Honda dealership today. Got talking about my old Prius and why I sold it on. They told me they had a Civic (Hybrid) in last month that was vandalised in an attempt to get at the catalytic converter. A failed attempt I must hasten to add. So even the Honda Civic Hybrid is at risk. Have a feeling it was a home grown copycat MORON trying his luck.

Not doubt a completely THICK and STUPID scrote who saw the 'hybrid' badge on the back and thought catalytic converter = FREE MONEY.

Incidentally, I have already dumped the Honda. In the few months I have had it it has spent 80% of its time not working.:rolleyes:

I seem to have the uncanny knack of choosing LEMONS when it comes to cars. The absolute exception being 'The Sitting Duck' of course who I am reliably informed is performing very well with its new owner, and is on a jaunt to Scotland as I type. (y)(y)

I shall of course keep you all abreast of proceedings (car wise) A return to the world of Prius is on the horizon I hope - and I can't wait. Nothing else will suffice. :):)

Hello peoples some further sad news gen 3 are also targets now a Uber driver had his stolen in Enfield and Jemca Enfield stated approx £2000 to repair.

Since this is a newer model there is not many after market options available apparently I confirmed this with local spare parts shop

So it seems they have moved on to the next target

    Not related to the above

That is not good to hear. (n)(n)

Maybe I shall reconsider getting a Gen 3 after all.:( At this rate there'll no hybrids left on the market that are not at risk.

What a sorry state of affairs.

Isn't that car park supposed to be secure? How the heck did these miscreants gain access.

I hope the owners of said car park are not taking your money and then moving your car to a residential street.

Nothing (and I mean nothing) surprises me these days.

I am sorry to hear that you Prius was mugged t4ed. :(

Isnt that a pic of the gen 4?

unless the thieves have engineered a new way to steal the cat from gen 3 recently? im surprised we didnt hear from this earlier

I would remain skeptical that its the gen3 until we get proper confirmation

Great. Did you get the bus to and from the car park? Mine is valet parking so hoping that its parked in a different area. Cheers for the heads up though.

Yes, it was the Long Stay with bus not valet parking. Staff told me Gatwick Airport now allow people to enter Long Stay and park for 2hrs free. That undermines security somewhat as no booking or payment is neccessary.

Are the catalytic converters in hybrid vehicles any different? Maybe:

I believe we’re now seeing thefts orchestrated by our home grown FECKLESS and highly uneducated RIFF-RAFF.

These would be the brainless morons who have heard via the grapevine through the reliable friend of a friend of a friend that EVERY Prius has a PLATINUM MINE underneath it waiting to be plundered by “He who dares”......

There will be legends circulating about how unbelievably easy and lucrative this is - the legend will have been planted by the very Grand Theft CAT gang who are now likely winding down their operations in the UK - they’ve literally picked the country clean!

Only a brainless nincompoop could possibly set about stealing relatively useless Catalytic Converters from Gen 3 and 4 Prii.

It’s because of mindless drooling morons like this (harbouring a deficient IQ of 35 or less) that I’ve had to spend a mint cat installing cat security protection and a 24/7 dash cam system.

It is interesting to note that despite the sheer number of videos of the Grand Theft CAT Gang submitted, and the very few persons actually apprehended, we’ve heard NOTHING about what happened to the thieves or details of any further investigations.

Sad to hear that other Hybrids are being targeted.

Their intentions might be theft, but it’s nothing more than futile vandalism.
You’ll know for sure when the crooks check your Gen 2 Prius out, discover your CAT is secured, and smash your windscreen in frustration.
That would definitely be our feckless illiterate UK home grown scum on the copycat trail

Sad to report another Prius (Gen 2) has had its cat stolen today.

Location: Lidl car park Clapham Junction. The gentleman owner only went in to Lidl for 15 minutes (tops) Returned to the dreaded noise of doom coming from the sanctity of the once purring Prius. It would suggest maybe he was followed to Lidl, or they were waiting there to pounce on an unsuspecting Prius owner.

I found this out from someone who knows someone who was in the shop.

The sooner something is done about this the better === never gonna happen!
I am so frustrated about this and it doesn't even directly impact me any more. :(o_O

Thanks for the reply, that then makes a mockery of it all, allowing anyone to just go in and steal the cat of any car they desire. If you are on twitter, make sure you message Gatwick Airport or post on their page what happened, the more people who know about it the better. I had a moan to Kent Police on twitter, they asked me for my crime reference number so they could look into the investigation because I Wanted an update due to no one else being helpful, and told me the crime number given was invalid! But some police areas are posting more on social media about it as it's still rife everywhere.
