Replacing the hybrid battery with a new Toyota battery

Don’t use a ft-lb Torque wrench to tighten in-lb bolts. Generally ft-lb Torque wrenches are not very accurate at the lowest settings. I wouldn’t even trust my 3/8 inch torque wrench for inch pounds, and I use that for the lower foot pound range.

 

Yup. 1/4 torque wrenches, usually scaled around 20~200 inch/pounds, are the way to go. You may need 1/4" to 3/8" socket adapter too.

 

Here's what Snap-On has to say about it. In the nuclear industry, torque wrenches aren't used at the ends of their range (I recall 25% from each end is the limit)

It's just a dark star in our local mall right now, nobody's even moved in. The last few years it was in operation it started to look very disheveled. I recall going in for vacuum bags, that we'd purchased there before: they didn't have a vacuum department anymore, had just a few a few odds-and-ends, and a salesman told me to just order them on Amazon. Which I did.

 

They still have a mail order where you can get these things. I ordered some replacement blades for a Handi-Cut last week.

 

Our local mall one has been vacant for about a year or so and is going to be converted to a Dave and Busters.

Nothing like an Adult gaming place in a mall.

Sorry...I know this is a really old thread. When you mention disconnecting the 12v when doing this work, is it sufficient to just unplug the 2 plastic cable connectors from the positive terminal? Should the negative connection and the connector at the control box also be removed? Thanks for all of your explanations and insight about performing this job.

 

My 2 brain cells never fully grokked the reasoning, but I've always heard disconnecting the the negative connection is safest.

 

People get lazy and do that. In theory it doesn’t matter. But shite happens, and it is for good reason it is BEST to always disconnect NEGATIVE first, then positive. Do the reverse when installing: positive first, negative last.

RAY: You're using a metal wrench to disconnect the battery cables. If your wrench contacts a piece of metal that's connected to the frame, you've got a short circuit, because all the ground circuits are connected to the frame, and the negative terminal of the battery is connected to the frame.

If you disconnect the positive terminal first and touch the wrench to a metal ground on the car, it’s tantamount to laying your wrench across the two terminals of the battery. So the reason that you disconnect the negative first is, if in the process of loosening the bolt to remove the negative terminal, the wrench should contact the frame, it doesn't make any difference. Because the negative terminal is already connected to the frame. And that's why when you go to put the battery back in, you reverse the order. You connect the positive first and then you connect the negative last.

Again reviving an old thread. I'm getting ready to install a new Toyota HV battery in the daughters 08, any known step by step instructions or videos on performing the swap?

 

Amazon, the new Sears except Sears, in its heyday, used to source most of its products from USA manufacturers. Sad.

 

This video is good, but I still used hv gloves and tested the connections before I touched the key points. Also it’s a little different since they’re swapping modules and not entire new battery. there are three bolts under the relays that separate the relay case from the module case.

 

Thanks Ds001001, I think I got it stripped down and ready for a core return after I get the new battery up and working.
