What's this chime?

    What a fun mystery!

Is there anything notable at the locations where the cute little song plays?

This reminds me of a feature one of my portable navigation units has in which I can load a POI database into it and select a POI category that causes it to chime every time I'm within a selected distance from a POI in the category. For example, if I select (heaven forbid!) McDonald's Restaurant, the nav unit will chime every time I'm within the selected distance from a McDonald's.

The sound you are hearing also reminds me of the chime that plays on the in-dash system of my wife's 2012 Prius v when there is an incoming email or text message but of course the phone has to be in the car for that to happen and there wouldn't be an incoming message every time at the same location.

Please let us know what Toyota's response is ... waiting with bated (or baited!) breath.

    It's driving me crazy! lol

Today, I had to take a quick drive, maybe just 2 miles away. I did not take my cell phone.
Sure enough, driving back home, at the same location...chime! Arggg! I can get to my house about 3 different ways and the chime seems to happen when I am about a mile away. Maybe I have my home address as a POI. I'll see if I can find something like that in the nav.

I have yet to hear from Toyota. Now what could they have that's more important than this?

Nothing saved in my nav POI. By the way, I am not running my nav when I hear this chime.

the fact that offline's wife's v makes a chime sound at least tells us it is part of the entune system

Your navigation system is "running" all the time and tracking your location even when you are not using it to navigate to a destination.

But the incoming text/email message sound in wife's 2012 v Five/ATP is only a quick succession of maybe three rising tones instead of a complex music box-like song like the OP gets.

It might be difficult to get an answer on this forum due to use of this Prius v forum declining and that there were so few v's sold in its final model years.

Well here is Toyota's guess. A swing and a miss...

Thank you for taking time to contact Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. and we appreciate the opportunity to address the concerns you have experienced with your 2017 Toyota Prius v.

After carefully watching and listening to your vehicle recording, the only suggestion we have is that the chime may be due to speed limit warning that will also cause a warning message to be displayed on your multi-information display (MID) in your vehicle.

If this chime is not occurring once you reach a certain speed, then we encourage you to contact the service department at your local Toyota dealer to set up an appointment to have your vehicle thoroughly diagnosed and to share the video of the incident.

Your email has been documented at our National Headquarters. If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us.

    Sincerely,

    Daniell T.

interesting. so apparently, the chime is correct, but it is a gps speed warning?

The Toyota response is in no way correct. My 2017 has almost 60,000 miles on it. The chime just started happening. Only when I'm returning home, about a mile or so away. For example, today I drove about 100 miles. No chime until I got to my neighborhood.

    Yeah, that's a disappointing answer.

Plus a appointment at your local dealership to have you vehicle thoroughly diagnosed?
Well if Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc...has no idea, why would I be less than optimistic that Vern and Chuck at the dealership would have any lightening insight as to what is happening?
Plus they aren't going to diagnose for free, so how much would you want to spend to only "maybe" turn off the music box?

Interesting Mystery. But disappointing answer from Toyota.

I've contacted Toyota and Lexus customer service only a few times in 30 years and there was rarely anything that could be called "service" in any of their responses.

Have you tried varying the screens being displayed as you repeatedly drive through the location where the chime occurs to see if a notification of some sort is displayed on one of the screens - navigation, audio, etc.? Does the chime occur when you drive both directions through the location or only when you drive towards your house? Again, is there anything notable at the location where the chime occurs - a store, gas station, etc.?

Something else to perhaps try is to post your YouTube video link on the forums for other more popular Prius models and see if someone responds with an answer. Surely this "feature" isn't unique to the 2017 Prius v.

Thanks for your response. I have looked through my screens to see if I have any notifications--after the chime occurs. No messages. It does not happen when I leave my neighborhood. Taking the same streets. Only when I return. It is all residential. No gas, stores, etc. . I will look into your youtube suggestion. I agree with you....surely I can't be the only one!

I know my iPhone saves places I have parked. I have my phone on mute and I’ve never heard it do a similar thing. I also never use the “wonderful” navigation system that is standard in our Prime ;).

Maybe you’ve used this in the past and it remembers:whistle:?

I've never used that feature on my iPhone and also, this chime happens whether I have my cell phone with me or not.
    The mystery continues!

was thinking bout a geofence too. If a device like fast track drivers have in los angeles is in the car ? So if an individual decides to block all cell reception? Meaning: creating a 1000 ft geofence near a specific point, Which is not technologically complicated. That fasttrack will beep same as it beeps exactlyl as we enter toll roads or when for example entering airport boundries ( LAX ). In other words i think thers another gps device in the car that generates that beep

No other device in the car, other than factory. No other app installed on Entune. Only happens when I'm getting close to my home. No matter which way I chose to enter my neighborhood. I have about 3-4 different options.

I'm so confused why no one else hears this damn thing.

    That's an interesting, unexplored idea!

Agusto, did you happen to finance your Prius when you bought it? Some finance companies require the installation of a GPS vehicle tracker and its installation is not necessarily disclosed to the vehicle buyer.

But I wouldn't think that vehicle trackers of this type would play a cute little song. They're only to make it easier to repossess a vehicle if the buyer defaults on payments.

I did finance through Toyota. Since 2017. I'm way ahead of my payment schedule. Doesn't make sense to me to start tracking that now.

I was kidding - mostly. I also thought about asking if you're wearing a Charlie Sheen-type ankle bracelet like the one he wore in a Fiat commercial that possibly could chime - sorry, I'm bad!:

Also, some dealerships have been known to install aftermarket alarm systems on all the vehicles they sell but to activate it only if they can talk the car buyer into paying for it. There have been several instances reported on car forums recently where these alarms (mostly of the Karr brand) have started malfunctioning and causing beeps and horn toots long after the vehicle was purchased. I've never heard of them being location sensitive but I know little about them other than what I just mentioned and that people have found some mystery hardware installed under their dashboards.

OMG! Too funny. Thanks for the laugh!! I've never seen that commercial before, although I probably still wouldn't have gotten your joke.

:) Maybe it was an ice cream van in a previous life ?
    or it's haunted
I would say it's tracker or POI in the nav. Try deleting your "Home" entry from the nav and see if it still does it.
