Everyone should be holding off until the 2020 model is available with 5 seats and Carplay. Even if you don't care about that, the resale value for those cars will be much better than the 4 seat prime, because Uber/Lyft drivers cannot use the 4 seat version, and they are a main market for any used Prius. I am even thinking about trading in my 2018 on a 2020 if the 5k rebate comes back at the end of the year. In 7-10 years when you go to sell the prius, the version with 4 seats will be much harder to sell than the 5 seater.

I doubt they will have the $5k on the 2020s at the end of the year. They're likely going to have it on the 2019s though. If you got more than $7k off MSRP before the tax credit when you bought your 18 Prime, then you may be surprised by what the trade in value will be. You should get a 2019 Prime this year and 2020 Prime next year. :)

This is my plan. Trade in a 2018 (22.5 in Feb - Carbana will buy now for 23.3) for a 2019 as soon as the 5K rebates are out. Then rinse and repeat. Possibility of getting two credits in some years if the cards are played right.

This is a good plan as long as you have sufficient income tax liability in every year to make sure you can use the full $4502 of Fed Tax Credit. If you get two credits in the same year then you need $9k of Fed income tax liability to claim it. There is no carryover with this credit, use it or lose it in the year of taking delivery of the car.

Might be a good year to convert $75K or your tradtional IRA to a Roth. Pay the taxes with your EV rebate.

Just got a prime advanced '19 in Central California. '20s were available from another nearby dealer but not the one I bought from.
    1. MSRP 34,345
    2. Dealer Discount 3,845
    3. Toyota Rebate 2,500
    4. Price $28,000
Talked to a couple other dealers in California first and lowest they were going was $30,000 for an Advanced, which is supposedly below invoice. Now going to try to get the $8,800 of govt rebates. California rebate is currently out of funding though I hear it usually gets renewed. In general, can I start applying for rebates using the dealer registration on the window, or do I have to wait till I get the letter with my registration and license plates?

    congrats on the purchase.
i applied twice in my state (PA) with temp registration, temp was from a different state even!! NJ...
one was accepted. no questions asked.
the other i got an email requesting further information(the permanent PA reg/license plate, and total sale price with evidence of payment),
i provided all evidence via .pdf in email. it was then also accepted.

Prius Prime for 2019 in California isn't bad right now - lowest I got previously when inquiring was 25,700 OTD

22,800 was the sale price -> $3,313.00 dealer discount on top of the 2500 discount. I would imagine it can get better during a sales event and with the 2020 coming out soon

Mind saying which dealer you worked with? I’m in Central California and may consider upgrading.

    Assistance appreciated!

Check out some earlier posts in this thread -- it seems like you can easily get 1k more on the dealer discount. They should have lots of pricing flexibility now that 2020s are beginning to arrive.

Also if you can, consider waiting a few months for the 2020 as bamike suggests -

Rayvas, the Military incentive is from TFS. Requires you to finance with TFS like the other rebates TFS offers to help get folks started off: college grad as well. Military and College grad cannot be combined. If you are both (a recent grad + military qualified, a rare occurrence due to the timelines, you'd take college grad since it's larger.
You cannot factor in the two (either, or) unless you planned to finance with Toyota Financial. :)

I beg to differ. Prime is not a big car, the back middle seat is not somewhere anyone wants to be. To me it makes zero difference between a 4 seater and 5. Actually I prefer 4 seater as the center console in the back is perfect place to store tissue box and misc stuff for the kids. Plus no Uber/Lyft drivers will buy 7-10 years old Prime for ride hailing.

sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't, then no choice but to use the van.

New member here, considering looking at a Magnetic Grey 2019 Prime Premium tonight. Right off the bat, the dealership emailed me a price of $26,900 price out the door. That includes freight, delivery, tags, and their "processing fee". Note: I pay no sales tax in DC since the vehicle gets greater than 40mpg city. What are your thoughts on this price? It seems pretty good for having done zero haggling so far. How much lower do you think I can go considering the 2020s are coming? I'd love to be able to chip another ~$1000 off.
