Hopefully, later this year, I'll be buying a new Prius Prime. I have a Gen 2 2005 Prius, which I bought new in August, 2005. I think I could get more for it by selling it privately, versus as a trade in to the dealer, specifically because I just replaced the hybrid battery. Here's some information on the car: -One owner -Currently just shy of 175K miles -Blue, with tan cloth interior. -Package #5, with the 6 CD changer -Cargo net in the hatch -First Aid kit -Taken in for every service and routine service, every 3500-5000 miles. - 90% of the time, I'm the only person in the car -Nonsmoker and have never allowed anyone to smoke in it. I have the full servicing history available and it includes: -May 2019 -New Toyota hybrid battery installed by a Toyota dealer. Two year transferable warranty on parts and service. -March 2019 -Cabin and Hybrid filters replaced -Feb 2019 -New Muffler installed (old one had rusted.) -Done by local mechanic -June 2017 -New Hybrid system cooling pump -March 2017 - Rear brakes replaced, brake system flushed. -Dec 2016 -Front brake pads replaced -Feb 2016 -Gas tank bladder was stuck deflated as I let the gas run out :O It's fixed and tank fills fine now. -Aug. 2015 -Large tree limb fell on the car during a storm. Insurance paid for a new roof (it was dented) and new windshield (since Toyota broke it while removing it.) -Jan 2015 -12V battery replaced. -March 2014 -Water pump replaced (@ 101,000 miles) -Jan 2013- PCV valve and spark plugs replaced -Nov 2011 -Rotors replaced due to rusting. I'll add photos later. Given that it's in great shape, getting 48-50 mpg, is clean inside -no pets, no kids - plus that brand new hybrid battery, what's a fair asking price? I'm in RI. Thanks for any input!
See what the local dealers are asking for similar cars in your area. With that new battery you should get around their asking price.
There is a "for sale" section in the forum. The easiest thing for you would be to go to kbb.com and see what it says the value is for your car. I did a quick search for cars in your price range and they seem to be running in the 3500-5500 range with yours being in the upper end of that range (depending on cosmetics.) Good Luck!
Reminds me of a similar thread in May. I'd happily pay $1000 more than a similar '05 with an original HV battery; with haggling I could go up to $1500 more. But you need to find an educated consumer. If you came to me in 2017 when I bought my '06 gen2 and didn't appreciate the incidence of HV failure, I would be hard pressed to shell out the extra cash.
I did look on KBB, but hybrids can maybe be a bit different, if you have a new hybrid battery and it's a concern to used hybrid buyers. Hard to find 'comps' in the area, because most used ones for sale have the original battery.
In a perfect world you'd get $5500. So perfect world $5995 obo and you get $5500 or $5000. But, realistically I think you are looking at selling it for maybe $4000-$4500 about 3-4 weeks after posting ad. Assuming you don't put that the roof was smashed from a storm and replaced in your ad. If you're going to mention that then might as well drop price to 3995 obo.
Well as a general rule the dealers always tend to pay less anyway and when they get used Prius a lot of them will replace the Battery Pack and charge accordingly. !9 years and 150000 miles as a general rule is what they are good for more or some less but that's the ball park. Since yours has already had the battery pack replaced ... they make a killing! I think you do better selling it private party and you should highlight the battery pack replacement. That's what I would look for in a used older Prius.
The tree limb dent didn’t even make the car fax report, I was just being upfront about everything the car has had. Thanks for the input on pricing, it’s kind of the range I was thinking.
Can I ask how much you paid for the new battery last month? With labor? Our dealer is asking for about $3000 total for our 2005 and we haven't decided what to do yet. We paid $4000 for ours last June and definitely wish we had gotten one with a new battery and known how close it was to failing!
Once you replace the battery with a brand new one, it’s good for another 100,000 miles. First one lasted 14 years / 174,000
When you go to selling it you definitely need to tell from the rooftops that it has a NEW HYBRID BATTERY FROM TOYOTA. This is what differentiates your Prius from all the other ones out there. Other cars will say they have new batteries, but often when you start asking questions it turns out to be a used battery of some form (rebuilt, refurbished, etc). Best of luck on your sale.
I would say lasts 8-10years easily, IF the car is driven regularly. Prius that aren't driven regularly, the HV battery does not seem to last long. Don't forget NEW OEM HV Battery, as understood by the vast majority of people, is "100% unused, made from virgin components." Rebuilt/Reconditioned/Remanufactured try to minimize the fact that it is still a USED product. Kinda like CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) cars, which means USED (w/ a huge mark-up by the dealer).
See Post#3; traction battery replacement options for Gen 2 with 210K miles | PriusChat Cheapest NEW OEM HV Battery I have heard so far is $1600! If you have some DIY skills, you could attempt replacement yourself. You should price shop dealers to see if they will lower their price on HV Battery and labor? AAA, AmEx, and Costco for dealer discount coupons too. The only upside w/ a dealer installed HV Battery is 3year part warranty; but the cost of labor is too high for essentially an additional two year warranty on a part that lasts a long time (8-10+years for many people).
