Peeling film or whatever it is(tint??)— see picture

    Just leave it as-is and tell anyone who asks it's Toyota's near-new "flagship" vehicle.

    If Toyota "circles the wagons", might be of interest to local news media, consumer protection story?

    Maybe eventually it'll completely peel off and look good again?

    AND.....emphasize that this started well BEFORE your warranty period ran out.
    Politely mentioning that you have been discussing it on a national forum might not hurt either.

    I don't think it's a film - but more likely to be a clear paint coat. Which wasn't applied properly is my guess.

    Well I work during the day, so 5 days a week it is parked in the sun, but I have had other cars that I didn’t even park in my garage and never had peeling clear coat or peeling anything, so it is strange that a 2-1/2 yr old car would start peeling already-but it is. I will just have to shell out the money for new panel things-which sucks, but oh well.

    Called Toyota dealer again, they want to charge $140 for labor—he said 30-45 min per side. So if I bought the parts from them it would be almost $500 for these 2 panel pieces, I can buy parts for 85, but does the labor seems high-I really don’t know norm for installing parts like these?

    I'd be inclined to wait. It's cosmetic, and expensive, and another couple of years with the replacement, they could be peeling again. And, maybe Toyota will come through, eventually.

    Here's some Repair Manual info, fwiw.

    Really ? Oh, well ??
    Do people take advantage of you often ???

    Check with a body shop or two.
    They might be able to do wonders for this problem without buying any new parts........and at a considerably less cost.

    I do not know about considerably less price. Maybe.

    Take a look at the file I attached: it has rudimentary instructions on removal. There's some sorta sub-assembly too, bit of a puzzle. But anyway, seems you just play a heat gun on it (or park in hot sun...), then pull backwards, to slip it off the connectors. Maybe easy, maybe not.

    Maybe some brave DIY'r with a 4th gen can try coaxing their's off, see how easy it is?

    Note too: the Repair Manual is a bit funky, everything sorted alphabetically, so "install" is before "remove".

    Have you gone through many car washes with those spinning brushes that wack your car? Those are known to have an abrasive effect. It is plastic.( I have the same color 2018) I would get a headlight restoration kit and try that on it. If it were my car I would sand to 3000-5000 grit use a polish then wax it or even clear coat it.

    These pieces are plastic, not metal. Because they are all black, they probably come clear coated from the parts store. If they do, they will be easier and cheaper to replace rather than repair. Mine are doing it to. My plan is to wrap with black (maybe carbon pattern).

    Mine look like that (a lot less, but noticeable), and I hand wash only. They are plastic. A headlight restoration kit is not a good idea. The gloss coating is peeling off, not discoloring.

    They are easy to remove with the hatch lifted. The fasteners will not break. You could remove and wrap them for about $10. Maybe in pink or chartreuse.
