Ok, just had ANOTHER windshield break from a rock strike in the corner of the windshield. It's looking like Toyota has made an incredibly fragile frond windshield. And to top it off I have an Advanced so the OEM price of the windshield is exorbitant! If they're going to make cheap thin windscreens, the least they could do is not rob you blind on an OEM replacement!
This should be covered under your comprehensive auto insurance coverage. Your out of pocket cost would then be the deductible only.
Furthermore, most insurance companies offer zero-deductible glass coverage. I don't know if that covers recalibrating all of the sensors.
That is usually for repairs only (i.e. a chip), and not for full replacement of the windshield. Replacement usually falls under comprehensive with the comprehensive deductible.
I have non-deductable comprehensive exactly for that reason. So far I have used it only once on my PRIME. So, is this your second time?
Mine survived a rubber shrapnel shower this morning from a semi trailer. Tire exploded in front of me and all the bits came flying back. The trailer appeared to be overloaded and as we went around a bend, the rear tire lost it. Pulled off the freeway and found no damage to either the acrilic front or the windshield. Just thankful it wasn’t worse.
Bummer! Sorry to hear that... My stepdaughter’s 2016 regular Prius also got a long (at least a meter total length) crack from a seemingly innocuous rock strike. I’d have expected the windshield to be the same part for Prime Advanced vs. Premium vs. Plus, and even Prime vs. regular Prius. I don’t know that for sure though. That, unless the sensor aperture for the automatic wipers is different, but I presume the higher trims of the regular Prius also have automatic wipers (can’t recall).
Just curious what is different about the advanced windshield? I thought they all came with camera and radar.
Different part numbers for HUD and non-HUD. Unfortunately, at this site (McGeorge), not available for sale and no prices listed. Edit - from ToyotaPartsDeal.com HUD model $469, non-HUD model $535. But, they specify a different part number for the non-HUD, at the same price as the part number listed above. LaGrange Toyota lists the HUD model for $441, non-HUD model for $429. So, not much of a cost difference between the two.
Usually HUD windshields are much more expensive ($1000+ for BMW, guess how I know...), but I suspect the difference in manufacturing costs is negligible, so wouldn't be surprised if all or most Primes come with the same ones, or they install interchangeably at the factory to save on production costs. The reflection in non-HUD windshields doubles, so it's rather easy to test the theory.
I'm talking about production line: the cost of constantly shuffling 2 types of windshields may exceed the difference in windshields costs, with all just-in-time/no stock efficiencies. But it's just my speculation.
On an automated assembly line, having the robot grab a different windshield is trivial. They already have to install a different dash on the Advanced (with the HUD), different front lower lights, etc.
I'm on my second windshield and like the original poster, I also got hit by a rock within a week of getting my new windshield. Fortunately, I only had a chip out that was repairable so no new windshield. BTW, even in states where there is no deductible, this is still a "claim". I found out the hard way when I had an accident with some small damage (~$900) and when my bill came in for my insurance renewal, it went by almost $1,200. When I called to ask what happened to their "accident forgiveness" program where they forgive your first claim, I was told that I had 7 other claims in the previous 6 years - all for windshield chip/crack repairs & replacements. So they have no deductible, but they count as claims. FWIW, I fixed this last chip-out on my own dime ($75 from JN Philips). I am not going that route again.
I have my deductible set at $100 for glass damage. Here in CA with all the horrible roads and the State failing to maintain the roadways as they shift gasoline and highway maintenance funds to other budgets, we just get a lot of broken windshields and other damage from driving. I probably replace a windshield once every 18 months. But I have also had the replaced windshield broken again within the first week. Maddening.
I would look for another carrier. That's an extortion, IMHO. I've had at least 6-7 claims in the past ~10 years for 5 different cars I owned, but my insurance never went up other than the time when I added a new car. Some of them are at fault (by my son driving and totaling the same car twice), others are no fault comprehensive coverage. IIRC, 4 of those claims were glass replacement including one on my current PRIME.
It is if the part is available. I could have gotten a free radio upgrade on a Scion, because the plant ran out of the stock part. Using a HUD windshield in a non-HUD car may be cheaper than over producing the higher trim.
If this were the case, they would have designed and produced just one windshield and fitted it on all models. Since they didn't, it is reasonable to expect that there is a technical difference that is important. And thus, they put the correct windshield on the correct car.
