my Gen 2 Prius got a hybrid battery update today using almost new NiMh-Modules from a 2017 Gen 4.
Worked well, drives nicely, fuel consumption I will have to see in the next weeks if there is any change.

That is the second one we know of. Please update us periodically on any issues.
According to Toyota, they used a higher grade Nickel in Gen 4 batteries.

Unfortunate for me last week my 2007 Prius battery died. After 259k kilometers of serving it was time to change it due to one weak module. I was skeptical about one module replacement, bet full battery was too pricey and economical illogical solution. So i started to search for crashed Ni-Mh Priuse's in local junkyards (living in Lithuania, Eastern Europe). After some research i found that Gen2 battery's are valued in 150-400Eur, Gen3 in 350-500Eur and Gen4 in 600-1000Eur. But i found that i missed one Toyota model with identical 28 prismatic Ni-Mh cells as Gen4 Prius - it's Toyota CH-R. Locally it's much more popular car then Prius, so i ended up on getting battery for 550Eur from crashed year 2018 Toyota CH-R:

I was surprised to see that new packs do not have venting pipes as older one. Also as mentioned earlier temperature sensor are on top, but modules have places at the bottom too.
So i started to unpack new cells and loaded it to old battery assy:

At the end i'm happy with fairly new battery pack at fraction of new (or chine's kit's) price.

If you get a chance, it would be interesting if you went back in 6 months or a year and take some pics of the buss bars/nuts/wires. Curious to see if any corrosion comes back.

 

Lets be clear about what is happening.

Many Toyota dealers are, as of late 2019, saying Gen2 HV battery packs are "discontinued" on their parts websites.

Meanwhile they are selling new cars with virtually identical prismatic modules inside them - that could be swapped back into Gen2 battery packs. But they dont sell the individual prismatic cells.

I find this very upsetting.

 

Unless you’re hearing the same thing thing when you actually try to buy one over the counter from the same dealers, I wouldn’t read too much into this, for two reasons:

(1) Some dealers do not ship batteries. They may not be set up to ship hazardous materials at all, or they may have found that they can’t profitably offer this service for a competitive price, so they choose to suppress batteries and similar parts from their catalogs. Depending on the catalog software, this may cause the parts to be listed as discontinued, rather than as simply unavailable to be shipped.

(2) The catalog websites are generated automatically from sources that are sometimes inconsistent. For example, when a part is superseded, Toyota may delete the old part number from the price file immediately, but it may take longer for third-party catalogs to reflect the new part number and its applications.

At this writing, Toyota’s own parts website lists the HV battery for 2004–2009 Prius cars (G9510-47031) with a list price of $1,950, plus a refundable $1,350 core charge.

 

I know they say the improved the cells for Gen 4 over Gen 3.
Toyota has never sold the individual cells or modules.
Only the lower end Gen 4 have a battery compatible with the Gen 2. The vast majority of Gen 4 Prii have a completely different pack.

 

Have you actually experienced this with your local dealers yourself? I have absolutely no problem being able to get a battery from no less than 4 dealers around me.
