178,000 miles is kind of a low mileage to have low power problems. I wonder what his compression looks like?
I wonder when his plugs were last changed? Air filter? Cleaned MAF and throttle body?

My engine doesn’t burn a lick of fluid between my 5000 mile oil changes. Would imagine the compression is at least ok since it’s not burning oil. Valves could be leaking but from my experience on other motors that’s probably not the case. The car doesn’t feel underpowered at all. I’m just going to have to plug my obd2 reader and see what the system is doing. The app I have engine link can show battery voltages and what not so I’m thinking it will show me some info that may help.

Strawbrad’s post is the one to look at, it makes more sense that the engine isn’t producing enough power

If you have a scan tool and an app that shows live data, you could get clues, such as seeing that at 70 it is constantly draining the battery, or a difference between requested and actual engine rpm, or other things such as the engine overheating; there are many different parameters that could help narrow down the issue.
