Major problems after oil change at Take 5

For what it’s worth the exact same thing happened to my 2011 a couple years ago after a Walmart oil change, had it towed to the Spartan dealer and they determined that the air box (not cabin filter) was left unattached, setting off all the warning lights. As the Walmart mechanics were trying to figure out what was wrong my 12v battery also depleted. Toyota hooked up the air box, charged the battery, cleared the codes and all was well. Walmart paid the $140 service charge. They had opened the air box to check the air filter.

 

Wow. If I have time tomorrow, I’m gonna stick a volt meter on my battery and leave everything on. I’m really curious how much voltage is lost with this idea.

Wow those prices are absolutely stupid. Batteries at my dealer here in Louisiana are only $175. And I am with John in the comments about that the codes could have been due to the fresh air intake left open for the throttle body. It's an interesting thought about the oil over fill, but she had the codes as soon as she tried to pull away.

A bad 12-volt battery, especially that low will set off all sorts of unpredictable random codes. There's no way of predicting what codes either.

The battery was maybe near-knackered in this case, was just pushed over the edge by this service.

If OP can be more specific about where they are, maybe they can get some help from a PriusChat member, assessing the throttle body. I just don't understand how it can be so shot, the dealership insisting it needs replacement, for $840.

FWIW, the throttle body can be had for $385 plus shipping, through:

And replacement's an hour tops, not breathing hard.

 

Get the new battery and then drive the car to see if there's any issues. Probably too late though, because it's been a few days since you posted and you may have already taking action. Please let us know the outcome

Hey! So I’m sure this is a long shot BUT, did you ever resolve this???? I am in the EXACT situation you were in with my 2012 Prius C - I got an oil change at Take 5 with an air filter change and IMMEDIATELY after leaving I got the “check hybrid system” error message and now it won’t start. This can’t be a coincidence.

 

I had almost the exact same problem after a Take 5 oil change. Noticed the acceleration was weak almost immediately so I pulled in to a gas station just a couple businesses down. As I was pulling out, the hydrid engine warning popped up and the car wouldn't go forward.

Finally figured out the problem. In the process of inspecting the engine air filter, they disconnected the air hose. Wasn't immediately noticeable since the connection is kind of in there. By the time I'd figured it out (it was an ordeal) my battery had died from previous attempts at starting the car (the engine would start, run for a couple seconds, then die).

Took forever to get a solid jump, but once I did it ran fine. Will find out tomorrow if I killed my battery. I've vowed to never again use a drive through oil change. If they make a mistake, it's too easy to drive off at which point it's your problem.

 

I have a 2014 Prius and have been to Take 5 only twice. Both times, my car bogged down and would not drive. I also got the check hybrid system error. The first time it happened, the dealer didn't figure out the cause, but got my car running. It happened again yesterday and the dealer told me that they didn't put the engine air filter back in properly so there wasn't a proper seal and the car went into fail safe mode. Fail safe mode prevents you from using the engine to put the car in motion.

 

Around here Take 5 costs more than the dealer. For a 5 minute oil change while you wait in the car. If that was not bad enough, some dealers are offering a buy one get one free deal. So two dealer oil changes for the price of one Take 5. Plus some Tundras are less than msrp. Of course they are made locally. Times they are a changing....

 

Sounds like to pulled out too much of the air cleaner assembly and some goon touched the throttle body with his finger taking it off of its calibration. Purely conjecture because I honestly still will never have enough information from conversation to make the diagnosis from here

 

Which battery are you writing about? They hybrid battery? HOW did you jump it????
The 12 v battery doesn't turn the motor over...
