Wow. So here's a somewhat different question - there's nothing wrong with my 2010 (fingers crossed) so is it a better idea to wait a few years to upgrade to a 2018/2019 Prime or try to come up with the cash for a new one now?

 

that's too subjective. if you are happy with your 10, and aren't concerned about potential repairs, keep it if yo like it.
if you have concerns and can afford a prime and want a plug in, go for it. 2020 model has some major changes, so there might be deals on 19's.

how many miles on your 2010? i test drove a prime, but my 12 only has 65k. i couldn't justify it, even at 20k. and the loss of hatch space turned me off. i really like my car, and i don't drive much.

 

if it were me i would be looking late in 2019, early 2020 to see if toyota offers the $5000 manufacturers rebate again in the northeast. and plan to negotiate on the phone and fly up to pick up a brand new one. its cheaper to buy new, than even a few years old if the same deals can be had as we were getting this past winter. that 2010 will start to need stuff in the next few years, and a brand new PRIME for 10k+/- off is a really good deal.keep in mind federal tax credit , currently $4501 on a new phev Prime, may not be around in a few years. thats why i suggest doing it later this year, not in a few years. of course that depends if you can swing the 18-25k final pricetag, depending on trim level, and the deal you can negotiate... for reference i got rid of a 2008 prius with 125k miles and upgraded to a new 2018 prime leftover in Feb. i also got rid of my 99 mecedes and got another prime leftover in March !! i paid approx 20700 for each one including all taxes and fees, no trade in for either car. both were premium trim, very similar options. look back in this thread fro breakdown of pricing. now that i see used ones selling for 28k , i think i could easily sell both cars, still under 3k miles, basically new, and make a quick 10-15k. problem is i want to keep them !! i dont care about 3rd seat in the rear or cargo space, so the 18/19 design is fine. ymmv

 

I bought a 2019 Plus last month and sold our 2010 so this equation I am familiar with .

Now I get 150+ mpg and helped someone a bit down on their luck with our old 2010.

So the upgrade was done for the right reasons.

Total n00b to the Prius game, just drove my first one off the lot, 2019 Prius Prime Advanced.

I spent a ton of time researching pricing and dealerships around Chicago, and can definitely say that no one is budging much on pricing AT ALL right now on these cars. No incentives in the region right now either. Many dealerships won’t go below sticker, and some are even selling higher than MSRP by thousands. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But that doesn’t mean you can’t get a deal right now, so long as you do your homework.

If you are around CHICAGO it’s definitely worth getting out to the sticks to purchase (I went way south). Here is the where I landed with my Prime:

Dealer here told me that the only significant 2020 change is removal of the rear seat center console; is that not correct? I'm about to pull the trigger on a 2019 but might reconsider if 2020 has important changes.

 

carplay, among other things. you can find them enumerated in several threads here. some find them significant, some don't.

 

Prices are very regional. Cost depends on how expensive it is to get the fuel to distribution sites, and market factors like supply and demand. The margin on fuel is pretty low, could be that stations have to charge more to pay for regulatory costs.

Yeah I'm pleased. Dealers really wanted to move cars this weekend.

Only the $4500 federal rebate come next year. Nothing here Specific in MA unfortunately.

not that i know of. the best rebate i've seen lately is on $2,500.
