Swapping in a Gen 4 Prius' 2ZR Engine into the Prius v

    Family members car 2014 V no oil consumption. Yes spare tire is out. On my 2010 I have 190k still runs but I didn't want to get stranded somewhere so I decided to replace motor before 100 degree weather creeps up on me.

    just joined "prius chat", love the video series from Ragingfit, love the hands on details. I've watch every episode 3 times, making and refining notes, etc...I would like to know if these gaskets are being re-used, or replaced? (ex manifold, #1 intake to head gskt, 2-egr pipe gskts, egr cooler to ex gskt) What are the complications with removing the flywheel? is it on a taper with a keyway? do you need a puller similar to a harmonic balance puller? I ordered my wife's 2017 engine for this swap and hoping for this additional insight.

    The flywheel can be removed without complication. It’s simply bolted on the end of the crankshaft.

    Reuse old gaskets at your own risk, however metal gaskets with the exception of the head gasket can be reused without any issue. I reused all of the gaskets on the EGR system with no issue at all. The rubber “gasket” on the intake manifold could be reused IF you feel confident that it has not flattened out even with the surface of the intake manifold. Worst case scenario you get a vacuum leak where the intake and head meet.

    how does the flywheel time to the crankshaft?

    There is no timing of the flywheel to the crankshaft. It does not matter to the engine or car what position the flywheel is bolted to the crank.

    It is only physically possible to bolt the flywheel on the crank facing one way. The bolt holes on the flywheel and crank are equally spaced apart.

    The image attached is a Prius flywheel. The face of it as shown must face away from the block. It’s clock position is irrelevant.

    thank you cnc97, I come from the motorcycle industry and this principle would never work there!o_O you already know what is the next ? then....what about the damper? I see ragingfit mark/index the damper to the case. what is being accomplished there, and is it necessary?

    All old gaskets. Very durable. Flywheel is easy to remove after the bolts are out. Bolts are torqued to a very high degree. No taper, no key, no puller. I love Toyota when they do it right.

    is this "oil catch can" necessary for this operation to be a success?

    I assume the flywheel is balanced. So why wouldn't you index it when you remove it?

    Oil Catch Can is analogous to a lot of preventative measures. Kinda like dental flossing, but for cars.

    The flywheel is internally balanced. No need for indexing it to a certain position

    well, here I go, it's sat. evening @ 7:00. I got my 2016 engine in Friday w/8,208 miles. :D "I've got my Prius up on blocks!" this engine swap marathon starts NOW! i'll lift higher, later.

    10:15 with the start of round 3, soooo many elect.connectors :mad:… oh yea, I found these couple of bonuses when I removed the lower skid cover from under the engine:cautious::cautious: the service manager told me they couldn't find any problems, that he had driven it 15 miles or so & it never overheated on him or made any engine noises.:cautious::cautious: just glad that I didn't leave it with them to check out my complaints "further" no telling what I would have been in far, then I would have been MORE :sick::sick::sick:.

    Last night I finished ragingfit's round/part 3 @ midnight & paused the marathon. but found an additional surprise that i'll share. Today I fire up the marathon w/ round 4. I agree ragingfit, "liars will lie", with that said, my momma didn't raise no quitter, but I will need to go get a set of inverted torx sockets to overcome this heaping mound of B.S....called an E.G.R. Then, yes, "nap time" again. Side note for any and all spectators that may tread these waters someday & have a fear of drowning:eek:, get a couple of pounds of bananas to consume throughout this adventure, at least your body will have ONE thing to be thankful for, an anti-cramping agent...;)
