I'm honestly not sure what kind of EV mileage I should be getting - since the car doesn't have any sort of "rated mileage" setting, I'm not sure if I'm doing well or poorly. My gestalt is that we're doing pretty well, given that our EV range is greater than the EPA rated range, but it's just a very vague feeling. For May, I'm supposedly getting 5.4 mi/kWh or about 185 Wh/mi (for reference, our Model S is achieving ~280 Wh/mi given a rated 300 Wh/mi). What is the rated mileage value of the car?
Over the ~2 years we’ve had ours, it has averaged about 4.6miles/KWh. That, excluding periods of extreme heat or cold (cold being much less common than heat here in Austin). That’s among the highest, if not the highest, among my PH/EV-driving colleagues. I perceive that the highest design priority of all for the Prius Prime was efficiency, as opposed optimal EV -driving ratio.
I don't I've ever seen a rated mi/kWh for the Prius Prime, like you would see for mpg or mpge. However, I personally get between 4-5 mi/kWh on average. However, from this thread on the 1st gen Prius Plugin, it does seem possible to get in the >10 mi/kWh range. I don't think that's realistic for regular driving under everyday conditions, but it provides an idea of what the Prius Prime is capable of. For reference, I believe the charge space on the battery is 6.3 kWh so those electric efficiencies roughly translate to: 4 mi/kWh = 25.2 mi EV range 5 mi/kWh = 31.5 mi EV range Which is as good or better than Toyota promises.
Anything above 5kWh/mile for an average monthly report is excellent! That translate to roughly >30 miles EV range on the average. My lifetime average shown in Drive Monitor 2 is only 4.4 miles/kWh, but that includes ~4 months of bitter winter cold when I can only get ~3 miles/kWh. During the summer month, I can get up to 6 miles/kWh sometimes.
it really depends on driving conditions. if you're beating the epa, you can't complain. there is no 'should'. even those getting less than epa simply means their driving conditions are tougher than the test.
The Prime is rated for ~4 miles/kWh combined average. 133mpge and there’s ~33.7kWh in a gallon of gas. 133/33.7= 3.94. My record so far is 5.8 miles/kWh which is netting me 34 miles AER. To get the Japanese rating of 62km (38 miles), you need to be closer to 7.8 6.2 miles/kWh.
I think your math is off or number you quoted is wrong. For 62km (38 miles) of EV range, PRIME needs only ~6.3 miles/kWh using 6 kWh as a usable battery for EV. I think this is doable, but 7.8 miles/kWh which makes ~47 miles EV range is tough.
You really meant miles/kWh right? Because using 6 kWh to go one mile is really bad, that would be about straight uphill
Just to make things fun, Tesla reads out Wh/mile rather than miles/KWh. I personally think a number that increases with greater “fuel” economy makes sense, but that’s debatable...
The issue is that small changes in consumption will result in large changes in value. 213mpg and 235mpg seem like a big change but it's only changing from 0.47 gal/100 miles to 0.43 gal/100 miles
This morning i was suprised that my miles/kWh yesterday was 8.6miles/kWh! Not sure what happened but that day i travelled about 15-20 miles with average speed of 40-45mph. Temperature in the morning is 61F and afternoon is 83F. Last week too i got 7.5miles/kWh. Distance travelled about 25miles but a little cooler temperature. .
