How to make battery last longest?

The car does that for you. What you see is really the 25/75 percent levels.
Or maybe 20/80. Close enough IMO.

 

35 years?? I admire the ambition and passion for cost effectiveness.

 

the problem with keeping the car that long compared to a gasser is that the tech is changing so rapidly, it won't be worth it.

 

If I recall, ScanGauge II reads:

83% SOC when battery is fully charged
14% SOC when it gets to 0.0 miles and enters hybrid mode

 

Hummm, 35 years. I may not be alive, and my kids (or grand kids) probably do not want rusted junk car even if the battery is still good. lol

To make it last longer...
Never store battery completely full, so that means as soon as it's done charging, you should start using the battery. Use the departure time charger setting to optimize this.
Set max amps to 8 for charging.it will take longer, but less strain on battery while charging.
Do not leave car in hot sun.heat degrades the battery.garage storage is best. extreme cold not good either, but unlikely you are anywhere cold enough that that will be an issue.
Only charge when battery is down to HV mode, don't top off.
Drive economically, severe Drain on the battery for excessive acceleration or excessive charging from hard braking heat up the battery.heat= bad
Change transaxle fluid at 25k and then at 75k intervals after that. This lubricates and protects and cools your major electric drive transmission system.You want this system to be working optimally.
Oil at regular intervals, and other fluids at every 100k or ten years.

 

How do you know this? Depending on battery chemistry, slow charges might not be best.

Two points - 1. If it's at 15%, I'm not going to not charge it and run out of EV on my next trip. 2. I don't think top-offs affect battery life. It's the accumulated bits and pieces over time, so two half charges are likely not worse for battery life than a full charge.

 

No matter what you do I doubt the original battery will last 35 years. Batteries have a lifespan that can be lengthened or shortened but still will not make it 35 years. Start saving for a new battery now.

 

Pretty sure the car won't last 35 years either. Then again, neither will I, at least not 35 more!

 

I do not know, there are some classic 80's cars out there today. Prius is an iconic name and the Prime would be one of the first that was plug-in. In a future world of electric cars, it may be super rare and coveted. OK... I'll take my tinfoil hat off.

 

Keeping the battery cool probably provides the most benefit of anything you can do. You can do that by parking in the shade, using the charge timer to charge overnight when it's cool, and avoiding hard acceleration and long regen braking braking.

 

If you have a garage, leave the windows down to help ventilation (this negates using pre conditioning after scheduled charging)

There are from the manual,
Avoid parking the vehicle in areas with a high temperature under direct sunlight when the hybrid battery in fully charged.
Avoid accelerating and decelerating frequently and suddenly when EV driving.
Avoid frequent driving near the top speed for EV driving.
Leave a low level of charge in the hybrid battery when leaving the vehicle undriven for a long period of time.
Use the charging timer function as much as possible in order to fully charge the hybrid battery immediately before starting off.

 

I wonder if a solar powered fan would help, since the inside of the car is often much hotter than the outside even if I leave the windows slightly open. But all the cheap ones are bad. Good Idea done Badly, Auto Cool Solar Powered Car Vent, Issue 12, Page 5

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good reflective shade for the windshield? The one I have is too small for the giant windshield.

 

Drive it once a month in EV mode. Drive it once every 6 months in HV mode.

That should get ya out 35 years worth, easy.

 

Yes and no. Unless the car becomes unroadworthy for some technical reason, I'd say mostly no. If it's just due to lack of infotainment or similar, an emphatic no. On the other hand, say all cars on the road were mandated to have some centralized navigation system, then a reluctant yes. Maybe...

Still, 35 years is pretty ambitious.

Prime reserves close to 30% unused.

I assume it is more close to 20-90% as it needs to keep some charge for HV mode.
