4.8l/100km (49mpg) over very hilly country roads between pick-up in Brisbane and Moura (via the Great Dividing Range). Mileage was 730km (456 miles), but I filled up well before it was empty. It's a good idea when petrol stations are 100km apart.

I was so impressed that I phoned my wife to tell her.

And I never realized there was a right lane - oh yes, that's right, that 's where everyone else in front of me SHOULD have been pre-Prius.
I just filled up this morning for the first time. I went until the last pip began to flash. Pump shut off 1 second in, and I thought, uh-oh, I just read about problems filling these puppies up, hope I'm not going to be here 15 minutes...I live in NJ where apparently we can't pump gas, stand and breathe all at the same time, so we're in the attendants hands. He just reduced the flow and it worked fine.

    ODO: 449 miles
MFD: 446 miles (3 on car when purchased; they must've reset MFD)
    Gals filled: 9.534
    MFD calc. mpg: 45.8
My calc for MFD #s (MFD miles/Gals): 46.78
    My calc (ODO/Gal): 47.1

    **Caveats:
    1. Since it's my first, I spent a lot of time tinkering around with it while running.
    2. Dealer had it for 4 days out of the first week to replace a sticking coolant valve (diagnostics, test drives, etc.)
    3. I didn't start employing what I've read here until ~ 200 miles into the tank (like, the tire pressure, pulsing, etc.), and I'm still on the learning curve physically to drive more efficiently. I will say that my driving habits have changed dramatically, no question in large part due to the interactive nature of the car.
    4. My wife had taken it out a couple of times, and I haven't yet shared what I'm learning since I'm driving most of the time (and I'm still learning), so she's probably driving as she did before(which is still better than the way I used to drive).
    5. Like many other parts of the country, we've have some pretty hot days, so the AC's been on a lot.

Back in March, 46.3mpg with 383 miles on the tank. If I recall correctly, I filled up with 2 or 3 fuel bars remaining on the gauge. Now I feel comfortable letting it get down to 1 fuel bar remaining, and can usually get 450-475 miles out of a tank. :D

The first tank where I'd filled the one before (as opposed to the one that they "filled" at the dealership) 388.7 miles, 35.7MPG. This was also the tank where I discovered that having the car downhill from the fill tube makes a big difference!

    My first tank:

589 miles (when the last pip was flashing)
    refilled 10.4 gallon
    MFD 53.9
calculated 56.4 (looks like the dealer pumped in more gas than I did at the station)

Woo Hoo, I just completed my first tank and I'm very happy!

    MFD 49.2 mpg
    Tank Miles 495
    Gas 10.356 gal
    Calc 47.8 mpg

The Prius really has tranformed my driving habits. Instead of speeding up to get to a stop light or stop sign, I just glide and coast. Instead of doing 15 over the speed limit, I drive the limit or 5 under (in the right lane of course). I feel much calmer when I drive and it's like a game trying to maximize the mileage. I find that I hate short trips that barely allow the ICE to warm up and I love 35 - 40 mph speed limits. It's a whole new driving experience. I just wish the seats were more comfortable. I'm 6'6" and my lower back has been starting to give me problems.... I hope it's not related to the car. Wish I could figure out an easy way to get about 3 more inches of travel back in the drivers seat.

Just finished my first tank - unhappily, only got 303 miles. The fill up was 9.3 gallons, calculated at around 33 mpg or so tank miles. I thought I had done well in learning energy saving driving, and my terrain is flat or mildly hilly, some highway some uncongested city driving mixture. Nothing too difficult. Weather was fairly warm to hot a lot of that time. Haven't yet checked my tire pressures.

I certainly hope the next tank is better. I'm not sure why the first tank didn't match the others who responded with 400 plus mile tankfulls.

P.S. My MFD calculated an average of between 45 -48 mpg during the entire first tank, thus I am even more puzzled why my actual gas usage was so excessive.

If your first tank was filled by the dealer, they probably didn't fill it all the way, so you are putting in "extra" gallons. The MFD of 45-48 is pretty good for a first tank!

Just filled up my first tank today, it took 8. something gallons. Got 49.9 and just over 400 miles. Fill up today cost me $20 (figures gas drops .50 right after I buy the thing). I just got the car a week ago and already filled up, on my old Subaru I only got about 260 mi. to a tank and would fill up about once every two weeks, think I like driving this car more? I filled my tires up to 42/40 last night so we'll see how this next tank goes... I'm going on vacation to South Carolina next week and am looking forward to some serious time in the car. So far I have removed the wheel cover rings, disabled the reverse beep, changed the doors to all unlock and taken off the dealer license plate frames. Last night I found the center console drawer too! Wouldn't have done half this without PC, now to master pulse and glide. My verdict thus far: this is a fun, practical well engineered car...

I bought my Seaside Pearl on Saturday May 19, 2007. The dealer I bought it from was ~63 miles from home so I filled up then. I refilled on 5/23/07 when I noticed that my Scanguage 2 was always showing less mpg than the FCD even though the miles travelled was showing the same distance. I realized that I still had the fill-up correction factor still set for the old car. Anyway, I travelled 248 miles and I could only manage to squeeze 3.3 gallons in for 75.1 mpg.

483 miles, 10.04 gallons, 48.3mpg average (although MFD said 47.1) Most of this was carpooling with 5 people in the car and a/c running.

The second tank I'm about halfway through, it's got 306 miles with MFD showing 52.7 average. This time around, mostly me in the car by myself, no a/c in the morning (I'm tough, I can take it while the kids can't).

My first tank was 400 miles for 43.8 mpg, the MFD had been reporting right at 44 mpg I believe.

My daily commute to the park-and-ride is only a 10-minute trip so it is going to be hard for me to post truly impressive numbers.
