Hey PC, today I'm faced with a dilemma to save or strip a prius I bought from a customer. Car is an 08 with 186k miles, customer came in for a battery, his existing battery was shot with modules between 1-6 volts. When new battery went in the car ran for a few seconds, then began to misfire terribly and shut off into accessories. Codes are P3190, P0A80, P0A0F and P3000. Battery was car tested 300 miles before install. The oil is a bit thin so I could suspect head gasket is possible but it's not that bad, spark plugs are being replaced now. Anything you guys reccomend I check? If it's too much work too fix I can still strip it for parts and make a few bucks but the car is fairly clean so I'd like to save it if I can. Replaced spark plugs, erased codes and then it ran noticeably better but then I got all 4 codes back plus two more! C1259 and C1310 I have never encountered either failing but could the car need inverter or transmission? It seems like even when the engine is running the battery is not charging. Is the engine oil over the full dimple ? P0A80 is related to a bad HV battery, if that is the case you may have a hard time charging. Both P0A0F and P3000 have INF subcodes (helps further diagnose), which OBD2 scanner are you using that isn't offering INFs ?
If you suspect engine and battery problems with the car you might be better off parting it out. If you decide to fix it make sure you get your diagnosis and repair cost figured out.
So I ended up selling this car for parts (problem solved right?) Well last night I bought a 2006 with 102k miles with same issue but with different codes, I see more potential in this car and am more motivated to fix it. P3191 engine does not start P0A0F engine failed to start C1310 malfunction in HV system After disconnecting 12v battery, engine turns on and runs for a few seconds and then turns off, car is still in "ready" and will drive but the engine does not come on. Any insight you guys could shine on the situation would be appreciated, I have a fairly good actron scanner ($450 model) I am still trying to get techstream to work on my laptop but having no luck. Before going deeper, the engine is being turned over by the HV battery and isn't actually starting/running. You have a limited amount of charge on the HV traction battery, don't waste it on trying to start the engine unless needed. If you have a way to charge the HV battery then go ahead and spin away, or move it around from point A to B
Start by checking the 12 V battery. It seems that the Prius gets wonky when the battery is starting to die. While you are at it disconnect the battery terminals and this will reset the ECU. See if the codes come back.
The state of charge on mfd was nearly full, I do have other tested hv batteries that I could install, but with the last car it was not a hv battery problem. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
It might help to have an OBD2 reader that can pull the INFs (subcodes) for the above posted DTCs. Here is the workup for P3190 (P3191 and P3193) : https://share.qclt.com/%E4%B8%B0%E7%94%B0%E6%99%AE%E7%91%9E%E6%96%AF%E5%8E%9F%E5%8E%82%E8%8B%B1%E6%96%87%E6%89%8B%E5%86%8Cpdf%E6%A0%BC%E5%BC%8F/Repair%20Manual/04pruisr/05/2054m/cip3190a.pdf Here is the workup for P0A0F (with INFs 204/205 and 533/534) : https://share.qclt.com/%E4%B8%B0%E7%94%B0%E6%99%AE%E7%91%9E%E6%96%AF%E5%8E%9F%E5%8E%82%E8%8B%B1%E6%96%87%E6%89%8B%E5%86%8Cpdf%E6%A0%BC%E5%BC%8F/Repair%20Manual/04pruisr/05/21bpm/0a0f204.pdf Do the above workups before tackling the C1310, as they are most likely related.
Forgot the workup for P0A0F with an INF of 238 : https://share.qclt.com/%E4%B8%B0%E7%94%B0%E6%99%AE%E7%91%9E%E6%96%AF%E5%8E%9F%E5%8E%82%E8%8B%B1%E6%96%87%E6%89%8B%E5%86%8Cpdf%E6%A0%BC%E5%BC%8F/repair%20manual/04pruisr/05/21bpm/0a0f238.pdf
