Has anyone else received this letter? I do not recall this ZJB letter being discussed here on Priuschat yet, and it could be important if you have problems with that brake booster assembly.

I thought someone had posted this letter previously, but I could not find it. But the one I thought I saw said November 2019 for primary coverage. So this is an 21 month extension on that. I wonder what warning signs I should be looking for.

I do take mine in Tuesday for the J0V update. I think I’ll ask them when I drop it off.

Yes, it came today and I just could not recall a PC post about it. But we are often overseas for extended periods and I miss things that way. For us, the basic bottom line is having the brake booster assembly covered until 150k.
(It would be nice if Toyota did the same for the Gen 3 head gasket.)

Believe it or not, after reading old threads here regarding the 2010 model being covered, and being frustrated that my 2011 wasn't, I was back and forth with my dealership and with Toyota customer service for 3 months. After paying the dealership to fix the issue, using the parts originally in the 2011, I had the same issues still. So the dealership also got in on the calling Toyota fun.

In the end, the dealership called to tell me that because of the issues I had, the enhanced coverage from Toyota was being extended and would cover additional VINs (including mine obviously).

Sorry to revive an old thread but I just got one of these letters in regard to my 2015 Prius 3.

Although this condition has not happened to us as of yet, it’s seems like this should be a recall since it is dealing with the actual braking system on the car.

My real concern is, since the Prius uses a regenerative braking system, if these lights come on and the booster/booster pump fails does this mean that the car has absolutely no brakes? Or like in a conventional braking system, you just loose power assist?

My wife and kids travel in this car so i want her to be prepared in case this does happen. We also own a 2006 Prius and will continue to own Toyota hybrids so it is not a question of wanting to dump the car, it’s just a safety concern

They put a good amount of effort into designing the system so you still have brakes if you've lost the power assist. They will only brake the two front wheels, and you'll have to ystand on the pedal pretty hard, and there won't be ABS.

it usually fails over a long period of time, not a sudden emergency like the inverter

Ahh so basically it will be driving a car with manual brakes or no power assist but there will still be a way to stop the car albeit with front brakes only. I am not really concerned with abs as I think the main thing would be pulling over to the side of the road and stopping the car.

The real question is will a 120lb woman be able to exert enough force to stop the car before she hits something if this happens... great...

Bisco forgive me for being a noob by saying this but f it is not a sudden failure what would be warning signs of this? I could understand a hard pedal or the pedal sinking to the floor while holding the car stopped ( this is a tell tale sign on a conventional booster/power brake design).

I honestly want to keep an eye on this so we catch it early rather then get blamed for a crash if it happens while she is driving the car.

it can make a honking sound like a duck, and do it for a long time without failing.

or the normal buzzing sound gets longer and more often as a leak develops in the system.

i have not read of many loss of power brakes situations. usually, you just get a trouble light, and the diagnosis when they pull the codes.

Ahh got it. Well I will keep an eye out for the buzzing noise getting longer and will also look out for the duck sound.

Funny Toyota does not just recall it for that. We have a 2015 so I am really not to worried about the oil consumption issue. It’s only got 57k on the clock

Yeah we've got that honking sound, pretty much anytime you push the brake firmly, just before coming to a stop. From the notices we've got, the deadline for bring it in would be the 10th anniversary, which'll be November 2020. I've emailed the nearby dealership Service Manager, and he's advised to monitor, bring it in when the cut-off date is a bit closer.
