U.S. Gas Prices May be Heading Back Near $2.00/gal again

Gas was $2.50 in St. Joseph, Mo today (8-30-06). With Labor Day coming up...lots of people taking one last summer trip...and the mid-term elections just around the corner...does dropping gas prices seem a little funny????? B)

40,000,000 barrels of oil a day are pulled from this rock and you think one man can control it - or even a bunch of white guys can. Then why haven't the Cubs won a ring in soooo long??

 

Look, nobody cares what the price of gas actually is, they only care whether the price is higher than they remember.

For example, people rejoice in the streets at $2.75 a gallon, because it's less than they remember, and will scream and complain at $3.49 next summer because it's more than they remember. Then, next September, when it drops to $2.97, they'll rejoice in the streets again.

The price will have to get very, very high before there is significant change in this country. I'm thinking $10 a gallon is the new mark, then finally it will be worth trading a 15 year old Geo Metro for a new Toyota Prius (that seems to be the metric that the mainstream media uses) because they will finally see immediate lower ownership cost.

I still think it's funny that very few gas pumps around here have raised the charge-card cap above $75. (Not that I've ever hit it).

Well if gas prices do go down I can bet you sure as anything that the quality of the gas will be going down along with it allowing drivers to get bad gas mileage which just means more gas sales... Basically the oil companies will break even. Just think about all the unnecessary crap that is added into gas and how adding more of it (like ethanol) will contribute to worse gas mileage.

5 years ago i got rid of my 65 mustang that got 12mpg since gas was INSANE like 1.75 for super...I got a 2001 focus that should have got 30mpg or so... i get 20-24mpg...cost to fullup 16 gallons of mustang was like 17 bucks 10 years ago...now gas has TRIPLED!!! in like 3 years...WOOHOO cheapest gas is now 2.99 a gallon...best i have seen in like 2 years...here comes my scion Xa 30+mpg under 15K trust me i want a prius but real #'s in the 40's arent worth it...since i want a car and my fiancee/wife needs a new car too...That and now the tax credit is going away

I think the tax credit isn't going away yet, just going down some. Anyhow, hopefully hybrids will keep getting cheaper & we'll continue to have more choices so you can be on the lookout when you get tired of your Scion.

I couldn't believe I saw $2.98 today. But....I'm not worried. It may stay in thed 2.90s-3.00s for a month or two. But it will go up again. Probably not before the elections, but come 2007 it will be back in the 3.00s and it will go higher than it did before.

 

so cheap gas is a problem because people might ease up on conservation and use more gasoline, but expensive gas is a problem because its an indicator that the oil companies are making excessive profits. <_< i think i get it now, all you really wanted is a "crisis" to complain about so you could feel important huh?

 

Well I just fueled up today (August 30) in Findlay Ohio and paid $2.28 a gallon, yet in Bowling Green, 25 miles north, the price is $2.52.... yet a report on the news late last week reported that Ohio now has the cheapest gas in the U.S. I am not sure why that is but I honestly never expected to see gas head this close to $2.00 ever again... although I am happy... I may drive a hybrid but im still a tight-wad... I still lament for the days when I started driving in 1998/1999 and was paying 70-80 cents a gallon for gas... I used to fuel up my parent's Subaru Outback and drive endlessly for ten bucks a week... ::sigh::

Gas prices go up & down. At the moment we are in a period of relative calm but you can be sure that it won't last. The increase in crude oil is based on supply/demand fundamentals - there is just not enough supply cushion in the market. And its getting worse. Supply is faltering but demand is certainly not.

So, unless you happen to believe that the Fairy Godmother is going to conjure up a big, new oil province (as big as, say, the middle east) we are in big trouble in the next few years.

PS. Tar Sands & Oil Shale is not the answer - yes, there is a lot of potential product out there but the problem is the rate of production - they cannot produce the stuff to make up for depletion rates being experienced out there.

PPS. We still have not filled the Strategic Petroleum Reserve from Katrina.

PPPS. BPs Prudhoe Bay production is still partially shut-in.

ITA. I saw $2.99 at Chevron and $2.89 at Arco yesterday and was shocked by the # of cars waiting in line to get to the pump at Arco. I don't think we'll be seeing $2/gallon gas again and the current 'low' prices are only temporary. They'll go back up again, as they always do around the beginning of fall.

I do think $2.00/Gallon is out of the question. Tensions in the Middle East alone will keep it high. The prices have stabilized in part due to the end of the summer driving season.

I noticed a lot of 0% interest 72 month financing on guzzlers by Ford and GM. Maybe I should have gotten a Navigator!

Can you pulse and glide in a Navigator, or is it "surge and bloat..."?

 

Had a gas war in St. Joseph, Mo today. Two stations in town across the street from each other kept lowering the price to try and beat out the other station. The winner went down to $2.29. Both stations had lines all day long. The police even had to direct traffic.

 

I am always happy to save money while I am having fun in my baby! Picked up my new plates on Tuesday!! MOREFPG against the Yosemite background!! First time I ever had special plates!!
