Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve

I'm too worried that the lever might accidentally catch on something and leak oil out without my knowledge. I know it's kind of an irrational fear (it's kept me from installing them on our cars with floor panels that need removal before oil changes), but nothing really beats the solid drain plug.

I have/had them on every Gen II where there is no underbody panel near the oil pan, never had a problem other than it takes a lot longer to drain. You can buy a clip that will keep the lever from moving if you want.

It's discontinued but is still available. Never had an issue or a leak.

 

I don't recall, bought them some time ago. Bit it was easy to figure out on their site. Haven't looked to see if they have one for the Prime but I have to ASSUME there are only a few drain bolt sizes and they do have one.

 

I have a spare Fumoto if anyone wants it. It was in use on my car for one oil change but I took it off. Part #F103SX.

 

I sent them an e-mail a few years ago and they responded quickly. I am sure they can answer your question. All my family have used them for years. No problems at all I do notice now thathey include a little locking clip, but doubt I would ever use the clip. The sx is the newer model that allows you to "custom" mount it so the drain lever is in accessible spot. I need an F108 -- but not for a couple months.

 

The newer valves also have a "nipple" to connect tubing so you can drain directly into a container rather than hoping the wind doesn't blow too much of it away from the catch pan. Yes I have had that happen, especially when you are near the end of draining and the stream is thinner.

 

Actually, you could always buy a valve with a nipple, or a comparable valve without the nipple -- the deciding factor being if you were worried about the "extra length" on the nipple valve vs ground clearance. Never went with the nipple valves. guess I like to live dangerously.

I had a Fumoto on my previous car, sold it with it still attached. A wonderful part and well worth the money. Then again, that car needed oil changes every 3-5k miles. This car only needs it every 10k, I still think its worth it, but you still get oily taking the filters off.

 

Which of the Fumoto valves works with the Gen3 Prius? I assume that the F103N (with the long nipple) would not work, but what about the F103S (with the short nipple), or do we have to settle for the one with no nipple so that it's not trying to poke a hole in the cover. (I put one on the Chrysler that we no longer own, and we have one on the Vibe that we still have, so I am an enthusiast -- but not if there's a particular problem with using one on our low-clearance Prius.)
