As mentioned above. Yes, it is real, apparently.

Oh, it's definitely a hardship posting. But I struggle through.

Yeah, well think about how hard it is for me!

    weather.jpg

Mind you, I genuinely wouldn't fancy being in Melbourne or Adelaide today.

For those of you working in old money, that's 113F in Adelaide for the next couple of days. Mmm... And the tennis players at the Australian Open this week are apparently having a horrendous time.

A player hallucinated he saw Snoopy on court before he fainted mid-match, a ball kid collapsed and water bottles melted on court as the Australian Open sizzled in extreme heat.
Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic collapsed during the second set of his first round match against Frenchman Benoit Paire and said he saw the comic character out on court as he suffered in the conditions.
He was unconscious for almost a minute but managed to return to the court before losing in straight sets.
"I was dizzy from the middle of the first set and then I saw Snoopy and I thought, 'Wow Snoopy, that's weird," Dancevic said.
"I couldn't keep my balance anymore and I leaned over the fence and when I woke up people were all around me."

Ah, yes. I remember cycling to school through sleet driven straight into my face by the 40mph winds. Ooh, I miss it.

That said, we weren't that bad for rain. Bad, of course, but nothing compared to Preston or Manchester.

My "old hunting ground on the wrong side of the Pennines was Leeds. I think we need to be clear about which side of the Pennines is right and which is wrong.

I have a friend in Dubbo (about 400km North-East of Sydney) whose daughter first saw rain when she was five.

That will be nice. And there are very few things that beat a British pub beer garden on a warm spring or summer day.

(Bet they'll never work out what they're saying lol)[/quote]

That friend I mentioned in Dubbo has in fact just got a brand new combine harvester (or at least the header unit) - I sent her this very link last week. Eeeh, they don't make music like they used to.

I've always thought of the Prius as more of a wine-lovers vehicle, rather than beer.

On the subject of in-car beverages, my wife's new Fit has dashboard cup holders right in front of the outboard A/C outlets. We'll see how those work for cans of pop or iced tea next summer.

I happened to see a link to this thread under "Similar Threads", even though it made no sense to link it. But I like it. My favorite beer hands down is Harpoon IPA. And pretty much all other Harpoon beers. However, since they don't ship it west of the Mississippi, I haven't been able to drink it in almost a year and a half sadly. One of the best things about Boston in my opinion.

Prius-wise? I have no idea what beer fits the typical Prius driver, but it's a great question. MGD64 comes to mind first.

Slightly crush the mint leaf and nothing else . . . no salt, no lime, nothin' else. The mint complements the Don Julio which has its own balanced, slight, floral flavor. Other clear or silver tequilas work but not as well as Don Julio.

Had to give up beer . . . too many carbs and unfermented sugars. Using a blood sugar test kit, I was able to map a glucose spike over a couple of hours from a couple of beers. In contrast, distilled spirits don't change the glucose level.

Bummer. I was actually surprised to lose so much weight after graduating college and starting the real world, and realized it was due to how much less beer I drink living in Southern California driving everywhere versus living in Boston and taking public transit everywhere.

Speaking of mojitos, apparently you can't get a mojito in Boston during winter at certain bars since they don't carry mint leaves. On my 21st birthday a few years back I was supposedly incredibly determined that I wanted a mojito, but they had no mint leaves whatsoever, and even the manager had to come tell me they didn't have any since I didn't believe them. He even apparently promised me a free mojito next time I came in. I of course don't remember any of this since it was the last bar of the pub crawl, and wasn't told until much later of the promise. It wouldn't have helped much since I have no idea which manager it was anyways. Oh well.

Crap, I kind of want a mojito now. Thanks Bob.

If you drink enough beer - or indeed enough spirits - you become incapable of using anything as complicated as a blood-sugar test kit. This, I find, circumvents the problem entirely.

The second year of my four-year university course was in China (the other three years were in Northern England).

Back in those dim-and-distant days, a pint of beer in Northern England cost around US$ 3. When we got to China, we were thrilled to discover that about 1.2 pints of beer cost around US$ 0.10. In such a situation, it would have been rude not to.

On average, the third-year students on our course were 14lbs heavier than the first-year students. While the cheap and delicious food in China should probably take some of the blame, the vast amounts of beer that we went through accounted for most of it.

I use IPA's to wash the mud off my boots. Instead, I recommend a local brew (to me), which comes from the oldest brewery in the U.S.

Ah, one of the very best! I remember going into a restaurant in Dover, NH a few years ago, and when she was asked what ales they served, the waitress started with the normal swill-list "Bud-Light, Miller-Light etc. etc." we interrupted her and said we asked for what ales they had and weren't really interested in drinking horse wee-wee, and then she continued "…and on tap, we have Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA…" We were so stunned that we asked her to repeat it once again, only this time slowly and with feeling! She took it all in good heart and got a handsome tip :) …but sadly, when we went back to the same restaurant a few years later and asking what beers they served, and Dogfish Head was conspicuous by its absence, they'd never even heard of it! (…such is the way of the world! :()

Ah, Theakstons - I well remember Old Peculiar! I used to live in Abingdon-on-Thames, which boasted https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morland_Brewery
and well remember driving in to work with the car windows open and the smell of the maltings wafting through was wonderful.
Every year on the Saturday nearest mid-summer's day there would be the Election of the Mayor of Ock Street (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayor_of_Ock_Street)
There were other breweries in the locality, Morell's Brewing Company (now defunct), Hook Norton Brewery (still going! - good old Hooky!). Ah, those were the days! Such a shame that as you quite rightly point out "As soon as a big brand get hold of something, they usually bugger it up beyond all recognition". :(

It was mentioned somewhat earlier in this thread, but lately have gone to Rolling Rock. $7.50 an 18-pack. It lasts me a month. Not much of a beer drinker, nor do I know a "good beer."

In high school, it was tall boy Burgermeister....is that even still around? LOL

Rolling rock used to be made in Latrobe, PA at the brewery that now makes Guinness Blonde;).

Now Rolling Rock is made using the finest water New Jersey has:oops:.

    But definitely cost effective (y).
