Maybe he should act quickly by sending our flying water tankers over there to help. :-(

    Tremendous!
We're gonna make so many friends.
This plan is gonna be huge.
However, it will cost us billions and billions of dollars.

Damage will be staggering. Macron promises to rebuild.

Some problem related to renovation of the Spire (it is/was surrounded by scaffolding) will be closely examined as a cause.

I'd seen photos of 'the forest' (attic) before. Very large lattice of white oak beams cut from >10,00 tress that were >200 yrs old at that time. They held the roof up for ~900 years.

Few similar European structures remain, WWII bombing having been effective.

It has recently become stylish to build large structures from wood. That may cool off.

    ==
Open lattices of wood lacking automatic sprinkler systems may all get a hard look, I suppose.

I.e. cured and dried far better than any firewood I have ever used.
Maybe partition some large open spaces with some walls to slow fire spread too?

I know that there will be resistance to altering some of these historic structures, very significantly changing their appearance and character. But it seems that over the long term, fire nearly always catches up with these large flammable structures. So it eventually becomes a matter of having an altered historic structure, or no historic structure at all.

(My home is one of the few in my area with automatic fire sprinklers. Most homes either predate this fire code, or are close enough to a fire hydrant to not be required to include sprinklers during construction.)

If I posted a picture of ND/s attic, at least in hindsight anyone would say "how has that not burned down already?"

To me, it seems like sprinklers or surrender for such things.

Readers know of tree coring to explore past climates. Remaining old European churches etc. may get new attention, similar to:

    ScienceDirect

AFAICT Notre Dame attic was never cored. Too late for that one.

To go Trump here would go to sprinklers he opposed in his 'developments'. We should not there, at least because ND Paris is a real thing.

Author Popal @9 already got my email on coring old Euro-wood that remains. Someone else ought to push for sprinklers.

ND has Jesus' Crown of thorns, hoping it survived this event, but (hello!) it has not yet been allowed to experience carbon-isotope dating.

    So many things...

I find it to be sad that a tragedy like this can't be a thread merely about the event, without immediately including politics.........recognize this for what it is....this is something that is now gone. There is no restoring something that burned to ashes. Build it again? Sure, but it's not the same. How many of us have been to these churches and historical landmarks? I have been fortunate enough, through company travel requirements, that I've been able to visit many in Italy and Poland. I spent a day in Milan at the Duomo and it's square. I've been in the salt mines in Poland and the churches that are 3 times older than our country. Without being there and seeing it in person, people have no idea how majestic it really is.....there is NOTHING here that compares....losses of this magnitude don't deserve to be insulted by being mentioned alongside politics.

    Save it for another day.

The new way of the world...........

    First pictures?

Honestly it looks like they did a great of a job saving it. Yes it's going to need a lot of work to restore but I'm quite impressed.

Thanks for the adult reaction. There's nothing political about this event. I've visited ND and it was gorgeous. It's a sad loss to a city rich in history.

I suppose they'll re-roof with more modern materials. It would be interesting to ballpark the cost of rebuilding with (?) thousand 200 year old oaks, and a sprinkler system.

Was "10,00" in #5 supposed to be 1,000 or 10,000? 10,000 strikes me as big.

Anyway, where do you even go for that many 200 year old oaks?

Not here, apparently. (And I liked that story.)

ten thousand trees @5. Other sources say five thousand.

Pretty much the only places remaining in Europe with very old trees are protected lands. You don't want me to reveal where those are right?

Roof could be held up with glue-laminated wood (add sprinklers) or plain old steel. Would not be 'original' but attic is not where tourists go.
