At what point does one decide to replace the intake manifold rather than clean it? At 132k, I cleaned mine out. It was a rushed job, due to unforeseen circumstances. I used a pressure washer and brake cleaner. The car ran smooth and cleared out the shaking/rattling noise at low speeds issue it had. Now, at 145k, it started having the same shaking/rattling noise issue. I'm thinking of buying a new intake manifold and simply replacing it. BTW, last time, I also replaced the PCV. The plugs were replaced at 130k. The car still gives me excellent MPGs and I have absolutely no other issues.

Did you just clean the intake manifold, or the whole egr circuit?

If you didn’t get the egr cooler, that’s probably the cause of the behavior soon after removing some of the restriction.

I cleaned the who EGR circuit. I did a rather complete job, except, like I said, I rushed cleaning the intake manifold.

I would second to reclean the intake manifold and install an Oil Catch Can. Also check the current condition of the EGR pipe (the tube between EGR valve and intake manifold), to get some idea of the EGR Valve/Cooler's condition.

Try some protracted Oxi-Clean solution soaks? Pipe cleaners are probably best tool for ensuring free-and-open EGR passages, the little passageways at each port.

Intake manifold removal for cleaning is relatively easy, once you've done it once.

I just ordered an OCC. Also, I bought a new intake manifold at a really good price. At 132k I cleaned EGR circuit, including the pipe and cooler. I would say I did a very good job cleaning it. At the current 145k, do I need to clean it again when I replace intake manifold?

Checking condition of the EGR pipe should give you some idea of what the rest is like. With only 13K since last cleaning, should be ok. That partially hinges though, on how thorough your last clean was. Oxi-Clean solution soaks, and/or pressure washer blast, will get the EGR cooler like new.

    WOW.

I've never known anyone with any car just to replace a stock intake manifold. Performance for hot-rod or racing ... yeah sure; but never stock for stock.

Well, for $50, I rather replace it than to clean it. No big deal.

I bought it from some guy who bought it for his Prius but never used it. I actually literally just bought it less than an hour ago.

I kept forgetting to ask: what you're consumption rate?

My use is strictly highway. I go 600 miles a week and consumes half a court.

Oven Cleaner does a faster and easier job on the build up. With a pressure washer cleaning.

I cleaned 2 intake manifolds at last month Prius meetup. What’s even more impressive is that raytheeagle cleaned and shined 3 EGR coolers in 15 min, he finished before I even got half of the 1st cooler cleaned.
