Sorry to hear you are a victim of Cat theft, I, amongst others on here, know exactly what you are going through. As others have said, get it repaired, then get the Catloc on, you still have many years of happy motoring ahead, we must not let these bastards win. I feel for the person who had theirs stolen for the 3rd time, although I would of hoped someone had mentioned protection to them, especially after the second theft.

Mine too was in a busy, well lit, under cctv camera. They did many cars in the same car park.

We also have a dashcam in full view. But of course it did not catch them as it was facing forward and it didn't deter them.

Thats disturbing that BoboGem is reporting that someone had their cat stolen 3 times.

Looks like that IKEA carpark in Edmonton is a real hot-spot for the thieves.

Theres almost certainly multiple gangs and groups doing this at the moment, but they must surely be hitting a wall in profitability as all the OEM cats get stolen.

No problem! As soon as the Grand Theft CAT operation becomes unprofitable, they’ll switch to kidnapping Londoners off the streets.

Anybody know how much a pair of unmolested Kidneys are going for on the Internet at the moment?

Well, nobody’s gonna stop them anyway. Right?

How far from London have they branched out so far? Isn't there considerably more territory across the country?

My companion usually parks her 2007 Prius in the garage, but for the next week or so it will have to be in the driveway where, about a month ago, her tenant's car had the cat stolen. We've figured out a way to park the car so getting under it would be very difficult. However, for greatest protection, it would be ideal to know the location of the cat, including which side of the car it's on. I can't get to her place for a few days to take a look and she's totally non-tech oriented. Can someone give me a quick reply? Thanks!

    Update:

Insurance has authorised local body shop to fix it. The garage said they will be installing a catalytic converter from Europarts. I had a look it's a React model. They said they don't install the originals add they are too costly and the insurer would write the car off

Which makes wonder about the chap who was hit 3 times. He probably had non OEMs the last two hits but still got hit......

Mine was re-fitted with an original cat. I was under the impression an after market job would be fitted, but whilst it was up on the ramp for something else entirely the mechanic told me it was an original and therefor at risk to be stolen again.

Not sure why it was replaced with an original, but Mr Mechanic had a look and said an after market cat for the Gen 1 was not easily available, so they fitted an original.

This information sped up my initial thought to sell the car on. Had I not had it up on the ramp I would never have known, as the original garage who replaced it were next to useless with regard to answering my Jessica Fletcher-esque questions!! I should have bombarded him with some Colombo style interrogation instead.:cool:

If I’d had to replace my stolen CAT myself at the time (and I was initially tempted to do so), I’d have more than likely gone for an OEM CAT too.

It’s a specialist vehicle and I wouldn’t have believed in a non-OEM part for that specific function doing as good a job as the OEM.

In the event, my thinking was totally illogical.
The non-OEM is working just fine with 61.4mpg on the MFD and summer hasn’t even really arrived yet....but, I digress.

Chances are the first replacement was an OEM. Some insurance companies HAVE done just that. Admittedly, most do not - quite wisely, especially as the scale of the Grand Theft CAT operation became clearer.

    Having had the first OEM replacement stolen, the thieves may have well assumed he’ll always have an OEM CAT under there, so they snaffled it again and again without even checking;

Or....he’d replaced them repeatedly himself with a used OEM from a breakers yard (unlikely but possible)....

I doubt insurance would do 3 x replacements for him on the fly, OEMs or not.

Lastly, did that particular incident really happen, or is it another jumped up story by another breakdown truck driver who delights in trolling Prius CAT theft victims with tales of unimaginable woe?!

I’m reminded of the Toyota salesman at my local dealership who, while taking my money for my yearly service, gleefully, and with malice aforethought (and a complete lack of tact, customer care or compassion) told me while looking in my eye that there was absolutely NO WAY to protect a Gen 2 CAT - and that was that!

I wish I’d caught him making that statement on video. Nasty chap. Another troll!

If anybody has more info on the 3 x CAT theft from the same vehicle, please do post it - and NO, I’m not calling who ever posted this info a liar, just pointing out the possibility the original source they heard it from might be inaccurate.

    Drive safe everyone

I was told by the garage who replaced my cat that pattern part Cats never work as well as the original cat, and they don’t fit properly. Well, my mpg has dropped from 50 to 47 since having the new cat on, admittedly I’ve only done 100 miles and I’m sure it need time to bed in, but I would rather of had an after market cat installed. At least the Catloc is on and all bolts welded shut.

Does the CAT even affect mpg? Im getting ~57mpg with the cheap CAT I have installed, which is basically what I was getting before.

Anyway I still prefer to get a new car really, looking at the gen3 and will snap up a bargain when one presents itself

It’s in the under the middle of the car to protect it park it as close as you can to a wall or another car that will be there and block it in both sides if possible making jacking it awkward or near impossible. So kind of blocking all areas of the front side if you can will deter them.

    Hope it makes sense

Thanks, but sadly (or not, as the case may be) despite working exclusively in the IT Support industry and being batshit crazy about digital technology, I don’t have a Facebook account. Or instagram. Or Snapchat.

Paradoxically, law enforcement in this fast waning kingdom have been quoted on record recently as saying anyone without a Facebook account more than likely has something to hide.

They’re right though. I value what minuscule privacy I have left in this increasingly dystopian big brother world, so I’m hiding it
