Tesla is already in federal tax credit phase out. Buyers are currently getting only half federal credits the first 1/2 of this year then reduced another half the last 1/2 of this year before completely gone. Still, with limited supply in the U.S. they sold >10k Model 3 vehicles here last month. Doomed?
Better can be a highly subjective term. In terms of objective health effects, gasoline is a much poorer source of power than batteries. One persons gain is anothers greater loss. Tragedy of the commons...
Bob Lutz: "...even the high end cars that they build now cost more to build than they are able to sell them for..." Model S and X are quite profitable. Volume is the issue with those. Model Y will be both handsomely profitable and sell in large volume.

Pretending poor poor Bob Klutz's reality was in fact real for a moment , if that's the case, I wonder why the Bob Klutz's within the industry don't listen - so they too, instead of going into bankruptcy again, don't follow the same 'Musk' business plan. Risk aversion .... it may be that the USA will never again try for a moan shot type experience. What was it that John Kennedy said? To paraphrase , something like, ... Now - the government has to give everyone a free cell phone, so we can call to see if our other free government stuff is already ready. .
