Prime in the wild.

I've seen a few around here, but the Southeast distributors are as stupid as the Gulf States. They are far more rare here than Teslas. I see those every day. I have not seen a Prime since I got my own two weeks ago. Really want to honk and wave.

 

You must have the worst luck when it comes to cars.

I finally saw my first Prime since getting my own over three weeks ago. Based on the 11" display and lack of fog lights, I'd say it's a Premium. It was white and was one row over in the grocery store parking lot. The guy was just putting his stuff in the hatch as we came out of the store, so I went over and introduced myself. He was elderly and had a very British accent. Nice guy. He had bought his w/o a test drive by ordering it from our local dealer and really loves it. Said he's put 6,000 miles on it so far and only bought gas three times. I mentioned that I thought I saw him a while ago pulling out from the pharmacy across the street. He said he'd never been in that pharmacy, so that confirmed my theory that there are two white Primes in my area. AFAIK, there are no others.

 

I just made our appointment on the 14th for our test drive and purchase.

Blue magnetism it is in the plus trim.

 

Woo hoo!!!! This thing is amazing. I don't know how yours will do in your driving environment. But the temperature was in the upper 60s this morning and after driving 9.5 miles to work in light traffic at 45-54 mph, I still have 28.9 estimated EV miles left. Eco diary shows 6.7 m/kWh after that drive. And it's just plain nice to drive.

If I had the resources, I'd buy my wife one of the blue ones even though she swears she doesn't want to replace her '07. She loves that color. And we need to hang on to one five-seater for the rare times we have our grandsons and my mother-in-law visiting at the same time.

 

My commute is 38 miles one way, so I’ll be a mixed bag.

But I’ll charge at work and at home (have a solar array at the house to aid in this equation) so that should help out.

I thought 50 mpg was good for my commute in our Gen3.

Can’t wait for even better results.

 

Before I retired, I had a similar commute (35 miles). I was only able to charge at home and averaged 108 mpg for the 6 months that I had to commute. Charging at work and at home will make you very happy mpg-wise.

My commute is mostly flat, but 3/4 of the way into the commute I have to crest Willow Pass on Highway 4.

This is the spot that usually gets the Gen3 .

But going home in a full charge I should be in really good shape to handle it.

 

I guess another question for you @Prius from Dad , did you drain the battery in EV mode, or allow the Prius to decide?

Not sure if I want to drain the battery, then have the engine wake up to 70 mph conditions .

 

In your weather, PRIME can get up to 65 mpg on gas only HV mode easily. I just changed my snow tires yesterday on my PRIME, and my first commute this morning on OEM Dunlop tire was up to 63 mpg. I did not charge last night for comparison of HV only mpg between tire change. Temp was still on the cool side of 33F, but big jump from ~50 mpg I have been getting with snow tires.

 

I tried it a few different ways and there wasn't much difference mpg-wise. I finally stayed with draining the battery. I don't think waking up the ICE at cruising speeds is harmful. Your rpm's are lowish.

 

I switched to EV at 70 mph one time so far. MPG bar was showing about 80 mpg for quite a while as the engine warmed up and borrowed from the battery.

 

Snows come off next week & temps starting to be more consistently above freezing (Spring in Western NY is a very mixed bag). Can't wait to see those mpgs come up again! I have a 700-mile road trip planned for the following weekend with no charging availability.

 

Just a perfect timing for the efficiency boost with the gas price creeping upward everywhere. You should be able to complete your 700 miles trip with a single fuel-up in a middle no problem.

 

Made the same trip last August - low 60's mpg on the way down (generally hi-lo elevation); mid-50's mpg on the way back up with a single fill-up. Not sure it will be as good, since temps are cooler right now, but it should be in that ballpark. Still quite an improvement over my '09 Prius!

Seriously, we'll likely sit tight with our low miles (80K kms) 2010 Canadian Touring for quite some time yet. Our usage is really low now too: "filling up" maybe once a month, and then only 20~25 liters (tank is 45 liters).

In Canada, as of 2019 model year, ONLY the base Prius has a spare.
