    Not sure what you mean by the plastic clip, but by posting this you mean I shouldn't be looking for ways to seal the air intake? Which is kind of what I thought, and thought it odd that that is what my mechanic was seemingly implying...

    I'd prefer a screen over the egress to traps, which may or may not work. The screen will stop them.

    It's one of those clips, IIRC, unscrew anti-clockwise with a pozidrive, a few turns and then prise out.
