Our 2016 Prius Four came with the optional 10 spoke alloy wheels. The finish looks like chrome but is some kind of a coating. The wheels have begun to flake and I have taken the car to the Toyota dealer and asked them to cover this under the 3 year/36000 mile warranty. I am still waiting to hear back from the service manager on his inquiry to Toyota. I have always hand washed this car and only used car washing soap on the wheels to clean them, The wheels have been kept waxed also. Has anyone else had a problem with flaking on the optional Toyota wheels? I believe that this same wheel is also offered as an option on some other Toyota models.
Is it this 10 spoke wheel? Toyota Prius Prime 15 in. 10-Spoke Alloy Wheels - OEM - PriusChat Shop I would think it should be covered by the warranty, but even if they will replace it for free, you may end up with the same problem again. Not the same wheel as yours, but years ago when we bought Sienna which came with alloy wheel, they peeled off exactly like yours. Not just ours, almost any Sienna on the road with the same wheel. I complained to the dealer, but it was after the warranty period, so they would not replace them.
I wouldn't approach the dealer with this as if it's a discussion. In my eyes, it's a non-negotiable, obvious defect, and the wheel needs to be replaced, now. As already suggested, though, you're likely to get a replacement from the same maker, with at least a decent chance the new one will be similarly flawed. Maybe you'll get "lucky" and get a new one from a different, we hope better, batch.
Yes. This is the wheel and it was installed as an option at the SoutheasternToyota distributor. I bought the car new. Has anyone attempted to escalate a warranty issue? I am prepared to go above the local dealer if necessary to get the wheel replaced as a warranty issue.
Have you called/messaged Toyota headquarter? Contact Us | Contact Toyota They were fairly quick to respond to my complaints. Did not resolve every issues to may total satisfaction, but at least they opened a case and a rep called me to ask questions.
Maybe consider a simple refund and restoration to the stock rim, which is silver painted? Maybe that rim's finish is just problematic, or the current run of them at least.
More likely they would swap them, send the peeling ones for repair and resale as refurb's. Whoa, lots of "re's", lol. I keep thinking of the time we bought a "new" car, and within a month started noticing the paint peeling off, odd sanding marks underneath, and different coloured primer. Maybe those rims have "history"? We traded that car asap, with overly generous trade-in allowance. Apparently the car has sideswiped a bollard at port of entry, and had been repainted there.
If it's installed by the dealer, I think you'll find it's classed as an accessory, not an option - which is a factory fitted item. At least that's how it is in Australia. They would more likely have them re-coated. I'd be surprised if they replaced them unless the actual rim was faulty. Same as your paint warranty on the car - if you had an area where the paint failed and wasn't because of neglect or improper treatment, they'd have the panel/panels repainted. What is the warranty on Dealer Fitted Accessories in USA?
Hmmm - is PriusChat double posting? I posted #9 - and it didn't show up. So 5 mins later I posted it again replying to Mendel's post as #11. Now they're both there.
No. They were ordered from Southeastern Toyota as an optional wheel. Toyota has agreed to replace the flaking wheels under the warranty. Taking it in next week to get them installed. Very happy with the service on this issue.
I have the same problem with the peeling alloy wheels on my 2017 Prius Prime Advanced. I just sent a message to Toyota. I hope they replace them?
You probably need to be more aggressive than just sending a message. I raised the issue with the dealer and had them document it in my service history. The Service Manager took photos of the wheels and sent them to the regional distributor where the car originated from. I checked with them weekly for status until they notified me that the wheel would be replaced under warranty. Only 3 out the 4 wheels showed damage at that time and that is what they replaced. Since then the 4th wheel has started peeling just like the others so I am going to pay another visit to the service department this week. My wheels were replaced days before the 36 month warranty ran out so I do not know if I convince them to also cover the 4th wheel now but it is obvious that the wheels were in some way defective. I only used car wash soap or diluted Dawn dish soap to clean the wheels so I do not believe that they were damaged by any harsh chemicals. It is a kind of chrome plating but I am not sure how it was applied to the wheel. Good luck to you.
Maybe ditch them, swap for silver painted stock rims, if you can swing a partial buy back? That sounds like a "lemon" finish.
Not sure how things work where you live, but here in So Cal there are a lot of places that will sand blast and repaint rims. It is professionally done and will last. Of course it will cost you, but if you can get the dealer involved, it would solve any issues moving forward.
I have the exact model and the the same 10-spoke chrome alloy wheels on my 2017 Prius Prime. It's an identical story- at about 34k all the wheel chrome has started to bubble, chip and peel. I'm taking it to the dealer to have them replace them just shy of the 36k warranty. I'm hoping that I have the same courtesy at my dealership today that @stevelawsn had. Sounds like a bad batch of wheels. I'll let you know if I get the same high level of service!
