New key fob programming

I'm not sure what "instructions" could have come with the key fob that would allow you to program it. My understanding (from reading posts on Priuschat) is that only the dealer can program key fobs on the Gen II Prii (i.e. '04 or later). After they program it, you shouldn't have a problem with "deprogramming." And, of course, if it does "deprogram," it's then the dealer's responsibility to fix it. As far as I know, there is no "master" fob, but it is true that if you don't have an already-programmed fob, it's harder (and more expensive) for the dealer to program your new fobs.

Another thing: programming prices vary tremendously from dealer to dealer, so you should shop around. There are probably others on this forum that can tell you specific prices.

 

A long while ago I lost one of my fobs, and had the dealer order one. The funny thing is that the dealer claimed that they couldn't program it on my car. Wth? So I ended up doing a google search and I found some instructions, followed them properly, and I got the new fob to work (while keeping the old fob working as well)

Granted it took a while to finally get the timing right, but it worked and I was proud of myself for outsmarting the techs.... Needless to say, this is another reason why I'm changing dealers.

It's probably the same sequence of instructions I followed... once to program the key, and once to program the smart start.

 

luiset83, when you say the programming worked, was that to use the remote to unlock the doors, or actually start the car? I have a keyfob that came with "instructions", but it only made the remote work the door locks. It does not start the car, not working as the ignition key. I can't find anywhere where this "car start" programming is avaialble for my 2005 "non-sks" keyfob. Thanks.

it was both... i actually ran across the instructions i printed a few months ago, but i'll be damned if i remember where i saw them or if i even trashed them (oops?) The codes being sold on ebay are only the door lock/unlock ones.... which are also posted on priuschat somewhere. I'll see if I find them again if I didn't throw 'em out.. they might be on my car's glove box or with some old papers stashed away.

Note that Victor (or the original author) deserves the credit for these. I just retyped them from the printout I made almost 2 years ago. Enjoy! These instructions are tested on a 2004 Toyota Prius to enable the SKS, door unlock/lock, and car start functionality.

update:
I did a slight edit because of a mistake I made typing, replacing 'registered key' with 'master key' on the delete all keys table... shouldn't affect anyone trying to add keys or do the SKS steps, though... I rechecked the instructions again and they are verbatim to the original document.

heh, well, the part that says On - Lock, I believe what it means is unlock (x number of times), but i'm not totally sure, cause i did this quite a while ago now. if it's not unlock, try doing a lock. i believe that i either didn't push the power switch, or only pushed it once and then did the x times lock or unlock.

It took quite a while to get the timing right... i believe almost an hour. good luck!

 

they won't charge you to replace the whole ecu... unless they want to really screw you over.

i haven't heard of any way to program the smartkey function without the scantool, but i haven't looked at the instructions linked above. you can program the "dumb key" functions with some raindance like procedure, though.
