I'm relieved I'm able to get back in to PriusChat. When I tried to get in here earlier, there was a black screen with a message saying that the site had been hacked. Did you all see that? I was wondering how long I'd have to go without my PriusChat fix!
I hadn't seen that message. I did see an SQL error relating to the login yesterday, though. It would not surprise me if the site was hacked. It's been running an unpatched version of IPB for months, and the script kiddies have released into the wild automatic programs that can exploit the vulnerabilities all on their own. Part of the problem is that this board software is so popular, it is a constant target, thus necessitating many updates/service releases, and admins such as Danny simply can't spend all of their time upgrading the software. http://secunia.com/product/3705/?task=advisories
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(PriusRos @ Aug 26 2006, 02:12 PM) </div> I too saw the black screen 'hacked' message. I think some people have way too much time on their hands when they start doing things like that to inconvenience other people. If only that creative talent could be channeled to a more positive result.
Yeah, bunch of bored children in my opinion. Wonder if their mother knows what they are doing?
Yeah I saw that early this morning myself....nothing but a bunch of dumb kids with nothing else to do. I'd like to see someone hack their computer out of existence. Either way, glad the board is back up....I love the wealth of info I am reading on here.
It boggles my mind why they would want to hack this site. You would think they had something better to do with their time. It is not like it is some big achievement to hack a site using a script.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(PriusRos @ Aug 26 2006, 01:12 PM) </div> I tried to log on here fairly early on Saturday and it was quite a shock to see that black screen. What could I do? Never experienced anything like it before. How long would it last? Would it do permanent damage to PC? It would have been the middle of the night for most of you folk so I suppose many of you didn't see it. By my late afternoon (your morning?) all seemed well. Thanks and congratulations to Danny et al for putting it right so quickly. I hope the CIA and Scotland Yard, etc are on the case!
Yep, that's the exact screen I saw earlier this morning (around 7am EST). This is one time where I wouldnt mind seeing a virus or worm to destroy the person's computer that cause problems like that.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Tadashi @ Aug 26 2006, 02:22 PM) </div> Very few "hacking" activities are done for notoriety these days. Money is the primary motivation. Everybody from crime syndicates, to terrorists, to political groups, to the unpopular middle-school kid halfway around the world has come to use elicit computer activity to their advantage. Some people make a living doing nothing but selling botnet armies to would-be spammers and other computer criminals. Think how many people could see his advertisements if everyone who visited PC was directed to it. Or think how many unpatched computers he could "own" if everyone who visited PC unknowingly downloaded his malicious code he embedded in the webpage of the defaced website. The list goes on...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(brandon @ Aug 26 2006, 03:36 PM) </div> That's why my main PC, the one I built for doing video editing work is kept offline from the Internet with no physical LAN connection unless I need to update a few programs (which isnt often). I use my laptop for all my online browsing. With my main PC offline, it's safe from any type of threat as far as hackers and viruses goes. Can't affect something if it isnt connected.
This morning's hack sent the active PriusChatters to PriusOnline where there's a thread about it (see here). Godiva's link to richardhertz on mamboserver discusses tracing this hacker's attack to his site back to Saudi Arabia.
I caught someone trying to hack one of the websites I maintain and traced the IP back to Saudi Arabia. Luckily NukeSentinel caught the query string and banned the ip through htaccess before anything happened. NukeSentinel is great if you have a phpnuke powered site. Don’t know if it could be integrated in PC or not but it would be worth it if it could be. I'm not saying that NukeSentinel is hacker proof but it sure helps keep out the script kiddies.
Glad to see danny had a recent backup to use. GOOD JOB DANNY! [now where is my bold and green? ] I was logged on when it happened [no it wasn't me <_< ] and had clicked on one link and then within seconds another. The second showed the hacked screen. Oh well, it was an early bedtime.
Does this mean that somebody out there now has a data file on me owning a Prius that they can use to bribe me??? I'm ruint! I told my mom and family on the east coast I just bought a new Mercedes. Now they'll all know what a cheap b*****d I really am! <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(M. Hey is TDIClub.com on the same server? I noticed that it was down and they came back up at around the same time. Do we need to check our computers to see if thay are the script kiddis zombies?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(theforce @ Aug 26 2006, 03:31 PM) </div> Just to be clear to the uninitiated, this could simply mean the compromised computer resides in Saudi Arabia; the perpetrator isn't necessarily in Saudi Arabia. The IP could also be spoofed.
PC Poll time: Do we find and grind all the hackers and feed 'em to the trolls or vice versa? GREAT WORK, DANNY! (Especially when one considers the thousands of us PC junkies who'd've been wandering all over the place twitching and accosting strangers, mutttering ICE MFD PnG Stealth mumble twitch mumble...could have been VERY embarassing!)
