As for attaching it, I think the real work is on the hatchback itself. You would want to anchor a d-ring to the metal of the hatch itself, which would likely necessitate a small hole in the inner soft panel covering it. You'd want it to be a simple ring that the dog leash could be detached from, in case you had some oversize cargo that couldn't easily bypass around the leash during loading and unloading, or for replacing the reel. Maybe a bit of electrical tape around it to eliminate rattles & rings as you bump down the road.

The other end, on the cargo floor, wouldn't need to be very strong at all since it is only providing an anchor against the spring tension in the reel, to keep the handle from floating up along with the hatch. There may already be a suitable attachment for a cargo net etc.

I figure a leash will be strong enough, people already trust them to restrain 100lb dogs.

We've had power lifts on all the Lexus SUVs for more than a decade and they work perfectly. I am not at all surprised that GM is having quality problems with their solution, that's why we don't buy from the Big-3. Ever. They never open when you don't want them to. They are quiet, no draining of the battery, it just works.

In some rental cars, GM made, with the power struts I hate them. They are not comparable at all. The last one we rented was some crappy little Buick. It was the smallest and most impractical SUV I've ever been in. Couldn't even fit the suitcases in the back like we do in the Prius, had to put them in the back seat. But if you open the rear hatch by grabbing it, that works. It pops open and powers up which is nice. Then try to close it. It refuses. You pull it down, it powers back up. Pull it down far enough by force and it starts beeping at you like you are trying to kill it. Then doesn't move. Doesn't go up, doesn't go down. You have to use the button to close it. This is different than the Toyota versions where you can use the button to open or close it and you can use manual power to open or close it. If it is open and you start pulling it shut there is a little resistance then it realizes you are closing it and lets you do it, auto latching at the end. In the GM, no manual closing for you!

He's showing off the soft-close doors. Watch as he closes the door but not enough to close it tightly. Then the doors pull themselves shut.

Thanks. It looks like $599 is just for the kit, and they do not provide installation. I wonder how difficult it is to install the unit DIY.

Looks pretty cool, I suspect the hardest part of diy is running wires

Yes, I think the front panel needs to be taken out to connect to the infotainment head unit to get the remote control to work, probably also need to connect to the OBDII and add a push button to the left driver panel. Also needs to run the wires on the liftgate to tap to power line, EUC & the 2 rods etc. Definitely 5+ hour's work.

Looks like they added some sort of “soft close” to the doors too. If you see video again, he barely closes the door and it pulls it closed the rest of the way.

Do a google search for “soft close car door” and it’ll bring up a few universal aftermarket kits and videos. Seems cool.

Looks like anybody who puts this in is going to need a bigger battery (12V). Mine has already died twice, although I have to blame the first time on me. It happened the first time when I put in my Illuminate Door Sills.

We had a power lift gate on my wife’s Venza and her new NX300h. Neither has ever had an issue and they work great. Awesome for my wife who has extremely arthritic hands, had frozen shoulders as well as surgeries. The best part is during winter you don’t worry about getting your hands dirty trying to open the lift gate after you’ve been shopping. Helps keep the steering wheel clean too.

Lots of rumors going around but I actually have this product installed on my Prime and it's great. You can set and adjust the height to the hatch back and I've been using it for about 8 months now without any issues on the battery drain. The installation will take several hours to complete and is probably the most frustrating thing about this product but once it's complete it works flawless.

If anyone wants me to make more videos such as adjusting the height and general installation let me know.

See comment #25 for the link to the liftgate kit. I don't know if they have a soft close door kit.
