The recommended is 0w20 here in the UK but may be heavier in hotter climates

My friend has a Prius with 83,000 miles on it and it started burning out...a quart every 700 miles approximately. Purchased used at 78,000 with a extended warranty. Was given the same options on solution. Her issue was not resolved because she is a single mom and cannot afford the extra expenses. Adding oil is the only solution. My family has 3 prius's, a 2012, 2014 and a 2016...leaves me thinking if we made a bad purchase.

Anyone ever think how boring this site would be, if Prius didn't burn oil like there's no tomorrow, clog their EGR systems, barf oil into the intake through PCV hose...

All we’d have to talk about is bad 12 volt batteries:oops:.

And that takes many years if looked after well(y).

There would still be the 600, 700, and 800 mile club posts to look after. Speaking of that, mine is giving me indications that an incursion into the 700 club might be a distinct possibility in the coming weeks. Significantly higher initial mileage indicated on the HSI on this tank. We shall have to see.

I remember before I was even a member here when the 3rd generation was still pretty new. There wasn't all these head gasket and oil consumption posts. The good ole days! :)

Before one gets the oil issues, one should do oil changes at 5K miles, use thicker oil then 0W-20, Clean your EGR around 100K miles, drive easy, not like you stole it. Change your coolant at 100K, most important check your oil at each fill up.

Being a Mechanic, I've been suggesting "proper" preventative maintenance since day one. Most here won't listen.

Engines wear, some faster than others. The user controls use, monitoring and maintenance.

Out of all the cars I own, the Prius has been the most reliable and predictable. But I have to add, there is a website called "Priuschat" that has this awesome community of people who pass on all of the issues they have had with their cars and show solutions to them! This alone, has made me want to keep my car as long as possible. I know what to expect to happen to my car in the coming miles................and I know where to go to get help!!

It is almost time for another oil change and the oil level is down about 3/8" which I think is about 1/3 of a quart. Before the clean out I would have put in 3 or 4 quarts by now to keep oil in the crankcase.

Did you also change oil viscosity, or are you still using 0W20?
