Interesting video, yes it's not a prius motor but a Toyota 2.4 all the same with the same issues Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Part numbers* for the pistons, and piston ring sets, for the 3rd gen model years: In model year 2014 the piston is revised, but not the ring set. What I glean from that is that the old piston rings fit in the new pistons. And I think it therefore follows, that the new rings would fit on the old pistons, and that the old and new rings must at least have the same overall dimensions as the old ones. * Part numbers found on McGeorge Toyota's online parts pages.
The video claims that the redesigned piston for the 2.4 liter engine is WORSE due to the oil scavening holes behind the rings being the same number and size, and the cut-out for oil scavenging being eliminated on the new piston. Huh. Now I’m curious about exactly what the redesign for the Prius piston and rings entailed.. Well, does anyone have the 2015 Prius rings and pistons that could be directly compared to the 2010-2013 versions?
I'd like to see that too, left a comment on that guys video (at the YouTube location), asking about it.
So does this mean that 2015 owners will begin to see the same issue? Or possibly worse? I need to change my engine, but I'm wondering now if I would be better off changing my piston and piston rings only? When I called the dealership, they said it would probably end up costing about 7 or 8 thousand dollars to do that repair and that it would be cheaper for me to just find a used engine to put in, but I don't to go through that hassle (DIY) to then have all the same problems. Does this thread have any advice in regards to the issue after seeing this piston redesign video?
Here's the thread with video series, swapping gen 4 engine into Prius v. It's the same process as swapping into a regular 3rd gen Prius: Swapping in a Gen 4 Prius' 2ZR Engine into the Prius v | PriusChat Google " lkq engines " for fourth gen engines.
Watch the video and decide for yourself. I'd say it's a little tougher than a gen 3 swap, due to some mods reqd.
Being a V isn't an issue. If you can get the windshield wiper assembly and motor off, the rest is easy.
So the new pistons and rings are maybe worse. But we don’t know yet because its to early to notice. We need couple more years to know the result.
We should be seeing issues pop up now. My Prius started burning oil at 70k after four years of ownership. I have yet to see any 2015's with oil burning issues. I wonder when was the earliest time that Gen 3's rings started to seize and burn oil excessively...?
I have 2015 Prius at almost 70k miles. It burned almost 0 oil in 10k miles. I changed oil every year or 15k miles with regular 0w-20 Castrol synthec or Mobil1. I believe 2015 piston rings revision really makes a lot of different in the way it consume oil. My EGR valves is still fine too, I have not clean it. Only checking how smooth it open/close. Make sure you put the EGR valve plastic caps all the way in or it will stall. What I understand, Head gasket is solved in 2013 model, oil consumption is solved by PCV valves. I am not sure why 2010 is prone to oil consumption more than 2013 with exact same piston and piston rings.
My 2015 gen 3 is at similar miles with no oil burning. The EGR has never been looked at yet. I'm hoping those issues are resolved in our 2015s!
