Featured VW's Transportable Quick Charging Station

    I've got to say the idea of an off grid quick charger is an incredibly stupid business model. Its a gimick for demos.

    But really this is about a movable 350 KW charger that is movable if they put them in the wrong places. Not a bad idea. Porsche and audi will soon have cars that can charge at this rate or close, and 2 at once is a definitely manageble 175 KW. Or it may supply four chargers with some combination adding to 350 KW.

    Tesla has reacted, and today anounced their v3 supercharger. Its 1000 KW supplying four chargers with up to 250 KW. The model 3 will be upgraded with software that will precondition the battery for fast charging as it comes to the super chargers, allowing the long range version to charge 75 miles in 5 minutes, probably really 170 miles in 15 minutes. Who knows how fast the older X and S but probably at a slower rate to get miles on a charge. The first vehicle from vw group to be able to use the 350 KW is the porsche taycan which supposed to be out later this year and be able to charge at 250 miles in 15 minutes from a 350 KW charger, but will you be able to find one?

    The tesla v3 will handle a gigawatt, but limit each car to 250 K

    i think the idea stinks.
    in fact, here's a prototype of VW bev charging .... only, don't follow too close because just when VW tells you how great their product(s) are in comparison to others, you find out their going to bury you waste (spelling deliberate) deep;

    So V.W. has come out/might come out with a portable 360 KWH battery. I wonder how heavy it is? What chemistry? How much per unit? Could be useful if affordable. Wouldn't mind having one around the house.

    If one watches the video, you can see their "innovative plan" is to have renewable energy like PV panels recharging their so-called portable battery storage stations. This is nothing new. Tesla already has many spots being supplemented with solar & battery backup already. VW could have just bought into Tesla's existing infrastructure if they were serious. Nevertheless ya gotta give VW credit for being able to copy a company that is not only innovative, but has over a ½ decade lead on VW's high & mighty plans ..... presuming they're still not lying through their teeth, as they did for years with their 40x legal limit pollution cheats.
    if VW thinks it's going to do more than 3 or 4 car charges with a portable - where each EV can drive over 300 miles ...... that so called portable battery would almost weigh as much as your house . I wonder if one of their diesel trucks would be hauling it around, or whether they might have to divide this massive portable pack into halves or thirds. Maybe a couple diesel trucks needed to Lug it around. They could save on diesel fuel for those trucks, by just hauling a big diesel generator, as it wouldn't take up near as much space.
    Oh the irony.

    From what I understand, they'll only be charging one car at a time, until the larger units come out. The is one of the initial run of chargers.

    The I.D. line up, plus some Audis and Porsches, is using an all new, BEV dedicated platform like Tesla does. The investment for that isn't minor, and it likely started before they were caught. VW will face issues with battery supply, but that applies to everyone not Tesla in the near future.

    The semi-portable chargers is just a stop gap, that can allow a quick deployment of a charging network until permanent chargers can be installed. A built in battery buffer can bypass things like grid upgrades and permitting that can slow installation of current fast chargers.

    Vandalism won't be a concern.

    Why not just follow around each of the EVs with a diesel truck carrying extra batteries and swap the batteries?
    You could "refuel" an 100 kwh car in just 2 minutes, I'd estimate. Wow! That would be supplying 3000 kwh per hour.

    Or they could develop their own infrastructure in competitive fashion if they were really serious.

    I can see where VW's shareholders would see buying into the other guy's infrastructure as a half measure. Why shouldn't they take their own goals seriously and build their own from scratch?

    VW has done something awful. That is undeniable.

    Does that mean that they aren’t capable of engineering and marketing a competitive EV?

    Is their sin unforgivable?

    I am waiting to see if what they market is a step in the right direction before I dismiss the company with diesel jokes. It’s too easy.

    A couple of high level people had to leave.
    Certainly there were many more that knew or suspected something was wrong, especially engineers, and said nothing.
    If the only penalty is a slap on the wrist, then everyone goes back to business as usual, what message does that send to other businesses and to graduates entering the work force? Probably just this...don't get caught else you'll pay a fine.

    I, for one, will probably never buy a VW product ever again (I owned a VW ~20 yrs ago) unless they do more than they are required to do by the legal settlement for many years. If they do less or complain or excessively brag about what they are doing...back to the end of the list of cars to consider.

    I once hear someone say: If you don't take a stand then you'll stand for anything.

    Who has more press releases, VW or Tesla? (Of course EM does it with tweets.) Now who has more EVs or charging stations?

    The portables are more designed for temporary events like a football (soccer) match or a concert.

    Tesla's battery swap takes 90 seconds.

    Then the shareholders aren't thinking it through. If we were talking gasoline, opting to make your car not accept the pump nozzle of a large and growing network of stations would be the bonehead move.
    We could make jokes about electrical gremlins instead.:p

    Part of VW's awful is that the American public didn't get a chance to say yes or no to diesel cars like the Accord and Mazda6.

    I think they are serious about BEVs. They didn't need to develop and test a dedicated BEV platform to meet any regulatory or legal requirements, and already have 4 models built on it out by 2022. Far cheaper to stick to converted ICE cars, like the e-Golf.

    Perhaps VW should be forgiven in time. Fortunately for me, BEVs that meet me needs are already available, so I can put off forgiving them personally.
    One of these countries has a fund set up to compensate the victims of their past war crimes, that is paid into by the industries that benefited from them. The other fights the victims in court. One of the two companies discussed here, has paid more into the fund than they were required.
