Prime tire repair kit!

Interesting thread. I have no interest in learning/attempting to repair a tire roadside. But I have been known to change a tire out with a spare on occasion... I asked this elsewhere quite some time ago but will try again here - anyone know of an aftermarket ‘kit’ that contains a mounted spare, lug wrench, Jack, gloves,kneeling pad etc.? If these items were contained in a handy zippered bag that fits behind the drivers seat (easily removed in the rare event of having 4 passengers) I think it would be quite popular.

I’m not a fan of driving around without a spare.

With Prime, lug wrench and jack are already provided. The tire repair kit with goo is also provided. No gloves and knee pad, but they would be easy to find and carry around. The biggest problem is the lack of space to store mounted spare in the trunk.

 

It is interesting that Toyota choice to do this all for the space associated with a dounut spare?! The instructions for temporarily "fixing" a flat tire in the owner's manual for the 2019 Prius Prime are crazy. All of the engineering that went into finding a place to store the pump and the whole repair kit and the jack. It all seems a little illogical.

 

I did a post last night and can’t find it (forgot where I posted it) want to update:

My situation again, I had a flat tire the night before, it’s 11 pm at night and I needed to go home. So, with no spare tire that come w my 2019 Prius prime plug-in hybrid, I used that “ tire repair kit”, with the help of two young guys! It worked and at least got me home, which is less than 5km away.

Next morning, got to my garage and the tire is totally flat again. Thought I could wait until Monday to get to Toyota. So, after checking the warranty papers, seems that no warranty of mine cover tires, I went to XX tires to get it fixed.

Result, the hole or damage part is on the side so they can’t fix it, only option is to replace the tire. I paid Canadian$225 for today’s job and the new tire which will be replaced Monday, for the time being, they installed an old spare from their shop for me to go around these 2 days.

Question: do I still need to visit Toyota for any follow up? Like “tire sensor monitor” adjustment? Replacement of that “ tire repair kit (pump and goo)”? My car is only 5 months new!

For the first time in this 5 months I started to “doubt” my like of this car!

Any advice is appreciated, I drove pleasurely for 30+ yrs now and only had 3 flat tires in my life, last 2 times I called BCAA

You'll know when you get it back if the TPMS works or not. I would think a good tire shop would replace and pair it if it was damaged.

 

If I remember right, tires, brake pads and things like wiper blades are considered wear items and are not covered by Toyota. If you look at the paperwork that comes with every new car you will find the tire warranty that comes with the tire brand on your car. If you have a problem you can still go back to Toyota and they will sell you a new tire but the warranty is still with the tire manufacturer.

Don't let one bad experience take the wind out of your sail, tire problems are really inconvenient but they happen.

Nope, no coverage for "wear items". From reading elsewhere, you'll need to replace the "goo" bottle but the pump part should be fine.
Really sorry that happened. I've had to replace 2 tires in my Gen II, both times because I was in a hurry and smacked a curb in a parking lot. :he :he :he Did in the sidewall both times.

$225 CAD (USD $168) for ONE tire? OUCH!

 

WAS the puncture at or into the sidewall? Or maybe it was in the tread, borderline, and the tire shop wanted to make a sale? Who knows.

 

I had some trouble at first and started pulling to the side and it came off.

 

The manual mentioned after using the kit, we should drive the car for 3 miles and see if air pressure maintains above 19psi and repeat the steps if necessary. So I am sure you can reuse the compressor with the empty bottle to pump up the tire. What I am thinking of is can the sealant bottle be opened and refilled?

 

yes, be sure to warn the Tire Guy. But IMO its really not that big a deal and I've done tire mounting.

 

Here is what you need.

That kit and XL size can of Fix-A-Flat (to inflate) will have you back on the road 90% of cases almost as fast as an Indy 500 pit crew.
The plugs have never failed me, even with already worn out tire and even if placed too close to edge of tire.

I carry a device of my own invention and construction that connects two tires and has valve, so that tires will equalize pressure. Its OK to drive on 15psi for moderate speed and distance, or you could equalize all 4 tires to about 25psi.

 

I'm not sure the plugs need rubber cement to be effective. I've got the black jack kit: it comes with a tub of "something", but as far as I know it's just a lube. I've done a couple of plug repairs with it on the Prius, both about 5~6 years back. One set of tires (the snow tires) is still in use, on the car right now.

Also, for airing up the tire, a decent quality, floor-style bicycle pump works. Yes it's a work out, but you are "motivated", so you'll get it done, lol.

Oh and a pressure gauge.

 

I'm not sure the cement is NEEDED but for 30 cents a tube to possibly prevent another road side drama I'll splurge. IMO the cement acts as a lube while inserting the worms, which can be very tough job on a new heavy duty tire. I"ve been told to apply glue liberally to rasp to help clean the hole.

 

Yeah I'm not clear on that either: seems like some kits come with rubber cement, others it's just a lube. The black jack kit is pretty high-end, and it's just got lube.
